Brewers waited out their opening, then buried Pirates with a four-run sixth in 5-1 win

For five innings, this looked like the kind of game Pittsburgh might steal with a few timely swings. Then Milwaukee turned one thin lead into a comfortable one, and the Pirates were left staring at the cruelest line of the night: 10 hits, one run.

Milwaukee’s patience mattered more than its power

Milwaukee did not bludgeon this game. The Brewers did something subtler and, on this night, more useful: they kept putting pressure on Pittsburgh’s pitchers until a crack finally widened. They finished with eight hits, but also six walks, a hit batter and four doubles, all without hitting a home run. That is a good way to win a road game when the big swing never arrives.

The first push came in the second inning, when Luis Lara’s sacrifice fly brought home Jake Bauers for a 1-0 lead. It was a modest advantage, and for a long stretch it stayed that way. But even before the decisive inning, Milwaukee had signs of an offense making itself difficult to pitch to. Brice Turang reached four times by walk despite only one official at-bat, Christian Yelich found a free pass, and the Brewers kept running enough traffic onto the bases to force mistakes.

Our take: this was a disciplined offensive performance, even if it was not an especially clean one. Milwaukee still left 15 runners on base and had two runners caught stealing, so there was room for a sharper finishing touch. But six walks and 146 pitches seen are not accidental numbers. They show a lineup that kept asking Pittsburgh for one more difficult pitch, and eventually got several that changed the game.

One inning changed everything

The Pirates actually did well to keep the night in a narrow lane for as long as they did. After Lake Bachar allowed the early run in two innings, Brandon Eisert and Yohan Ramirez combined for three scoreless innings. Through five innings, Pittsburgh trailed only 1-0, which meant a game with very little margin and plenty of chances still hanging around.

Then came the sixth, and the scoreboard moved all at once. Yelich walked, Turang scored on a Gregory Soto wild pitch, and suddenly the lead had doubled without Milwaukee needing a hit on that play. Lara followed with a double to right that scored William Contreras and sent Yelich to third. Joey Ortiz then lined a single to left that brought home both Yelich and Lara, stretching the score to 5-0. In a matter of a few batters, a tense game became a steep one.

That inning belongs to Ortiz and Lara as much as anyone. Lara drove in Milwaukee’s first run with the sacrifice fly and its third with the double, finishing with two RBIs. Ortiz went 3-for-4 and delivered the two-run single that gave the inning its final shove. Soto’s line tells the other side of the story just as clearly: one-third of an inning, two hits, four earned runs, two walks and a wild pitch. Pittsburgh’s bullpen had nearly threaded the middle innings, then one short appearance undid most of the night.

Ten hits should feel bigger than this

Pittsburgh’s frustration is easy to locate in the numbers. The Pirates had more hits than Milwaukee, 10 to 8, and still never seriously threatened the result. Rafael Flores Jr. went 4-for-4. Nick Gonzales had two hits and a walk. Brandon Lowe finally broke through with a solo homer to right in the eighth. Yet the team total stayed at one run, and 20 runners were left on base. That is not a mystery of bad luck alone; it is what happens when traffic never turns into a sustained inning.

Milwaukee’s pitching deserves credit for that. Jacob Misiorowski worked five scoreless innings, allowed five hits, walked one and struck out seven over 82 pitches. Aaron Ashby covered the sixth and seventh without allowing a run, and even after DL Hall gave up Lowe’s homer in the eighth, Trevor Megill closed the ninth while working around two hits. The Brewers did not suppress contact entirely, but they consistently prevented Pittsburgh from stacking the right swings together.

Our take: the Pirates do not need to reinvent themselves after a game like this, but they do need more selectivity and more support from the bats that went quiet. Pittsburgh drew only two walks, struck out 10 times, and got nothing from Bryan Reynolds and Oneil Cruz, who combined to go 0-for-8 with six strikeouts. When Flores collects four hits and Gonzales reaches three times, that should produce more than one run. For Milwaukee, the lesson is a happier one. The Brewers proved they can win a game with patience, doubles and enough pitching to keep a hit total from becoming actual damage. That makes the 5-1 score feel earned, not accidental.
