Brewers answer Tatis homer, then shut down Padres in 3-1 win at Petco Park

Milwaukee pieced together the margin

The Brewers did not overpower San Diego so much as outlast it at the plate. Milwaukee finished with 10 hits, four walks, a hit batter and two stolen bases, and that steady flow of traffic was enough to produce the three runs needed. The Padres, by contrast, got only one jolt of damage all night and could not build another scoring inning around it.

Milwaukee opened the scoring in the third when Garrett Mitchell lined a single to centre that brought home Sal Frelick. San Diego answered in the bottom half through Fernando Tatis Jr., who tied the game with a 429-foot homer to centre. That left the game even at 1-1, but only briefly. The Brewers kept putting men aboard, and eventually the repeated pressure showed up on the scoreboard again.

The go-ahead run came in the fifth. Mitchell scored this time, crossing on Jackson Chourio's single to centre for a 2-1 Milwaukee lead. An inning later the Brewers added a cleaner insurance run: Jake Bauers scored on Frelick's sacrifice fly to left. It was not a loud offensive performance in the home-run sense, but it was organised and persistent, with Milwaukee generating all three runs through contact and situational hitting rather than one swing.

Middle innings belonged to the Brewers' staff

Robert Gasser gave Milwaukee a workable start. The left-hander covered four innings, allowed three hits and one earned run, walked one and struck out three. The only ball that truly hurt him was Tatis's solo shot. Beyond that, San Diego did not produce another extra-base hit, and Gasser handed the game over with Milwaukee still very much in control of the larger pitching picture.

Once the Brewers moved back in front, Aaron Ashby gave them the game's steadiest stretch. Ashby worked three scoreless innings, did not allow a hit, walked two and struck out three over 38 pitches. That outing changed the shape of the night. San Diego had tied the game with one swing, but Ashby prevented any follow-up and turned the middle innings into a dead end for the Padres' offence.

Abner Uribe and Trevor Megill finished the job without allowing a hit in the last two innings. Uribe walked one and struck out one in the eighth, and Megill struck out two in a clean ninth. In total, Milwaukee pitchers held San Diego to three hits and four walks while striking out nine. Just as important, the only Padres to record hits were Tatis, Jackson Merrill and Manny Machado. No one else in the lineup broke through.

Our take: the score was close, but Milwaukee carried more of the game

A one-run game deep into the night can make everything look fragile, but Milwaukee earned more breathing room than the final margin suggests. The Brewers saw 148 pitches, struck out only three times and sent 40 plate appearances to the box. They also got multi-hit games from Mitchell and William Contreras, while Bauers reached base in all four of his trips with a hit and three walks. That is a healthy offensive foundation even if it produced only three runs.

The part Milwaukee would still want cleaned up is obvious enough: more conversion from that volume of traffic. Ten hits, four walks and a hit batter usually create a larger total than three runs. Even so, there is real value in winning a game without the long ball. The Brewers showed they could keep an inning alive, move the burden from one hitter to the next and score in separate pockets instead of waiting for a single big swing.

For San Diego, the issue was not that the club lacked one marquee moment. Tatis supplied that with the third-inning homer. The problem was that nothing substantial followed. The Padres drew four walks, but the rest of the attack produced only two singles and finished with nine strikeouts. A reasonable next step is simply more contact around those free baserunners. On this night, too many plate appearances ended before a larger inning had any chance to form.

That is why the game felt settled by accumulation. Milwaukee scored on a single, answered the tie with another single, then added a sacrifice fly for separation. San Diego had the night's biggest swing, but not the night's stronger body of work. At Petco Park, the Brewers built the cleaner game, and their bullpen made sure one good inning from the Padres stayed at one good inning.
