Drew Gilbert drives all five Giants runs as San Francisco’s early burst puts away Twins

Four quick runs changed the shape of the night

The game’s most important work was done before the middle innings arrived. San Francisco scored twice in the first when Brett Harris lined a single to center that brought home Gilbert and Bo Davidson, then doubled the lead in the second when Gilbert answered with a two-run single of his own, scoring Osleivis Basabe and Christian Koss. Against a Minnesota club that finished with four hits and one walk, that 4-0 start was not just useful; it was nearly the entire map of the game.

That opening stretch is what will bother the Twins most, because their pitching line was not otherwise loose. Zebby Matthews struck out nine and did not issue a walk over 5.0 innings, but the Giants still collected eight hits and five runs against him. There is a blunt lesson in that combination. Swing-and-miss can cover a lot, but not when the contact that does arrive is clustered early and cleanly enough to put a game on tilt.

Gilbert was the hinge, Harris the first hammer

Gilbert’s stat line explains almost everything about San Francisco’s offense. He went 3-for-4, scored twice, drove in three and added a solo homer to right in the fifth to restore the Giants’ four-run margin at 5-1. Put simply, he had a hand in every Giants run. Harris supplied the first decisive blow with his two-run single in the first, and together the two hitters produced all five RBIs.

There was, however, a second story inside the home offense: San Francisco left room for more. The Giants had 10 hits, including two doubles and Gilbert’s home run, yet still stranded 14 runners and struck out 13 times without drawing a walk. That is an unusual line for a winning team and a reminder that this could have become much more lopsided. The production at the top of the scoring summary was enough; the efficiency deeper into the game was not.

Our take: this was a convincing win without being a perfectly rounded offensive performance. A club that can score five while never walking has clearly found enough hittable pitches, but a lineup that also strands 14 is living a little too inning-to-inning. The Giants do not need a redesign after a win like this. They do, though, have a reason to want their traffic to turn into cleaner finishing the next time they string together 10 hits.

Minnesota’s power showed up, but too little else traveled

The Twins’ two runs came the same way: alone. Brooks Lee homered to right-center in the fourth, and Emmanuel Rodriguez drove one to center in the eighth. Those swings prevented the line from looking flat, and they also exposed the one place San Francisco’s pitchers were vulnerable. But the larger pitching picture still belonged to the Giants. Over nine innings they allowed just four hits and one walk, good for a .129 opponent average and a 0.56 WHIP on the night.

Blade Tidwell covered 3.1 innings and gave up the first solo shot, Tristan Beck followed with 2.2 hitless innings, Sam Hentges added a clean strikeout-heavy inning apart from one walk, Jason Foley yielded the second homer, and Trent Harris finished the job with a scoreless ninth. Without a save situation to frame the bullpen, the useful takeaway is simpler: Minnesota never built sustained traffic. Two home runs can threaten a game only if something else joins them, and nothing did.

Our take: the Twins can leave this one knowing the power was real but also knowing the attack was too thin. Two homers accounted for half their hits and all their runs, while the rest of the lineup produced one walk, one additional single from Walker Jenkins, one from Alan Roden, and little else. If there is an immediate place to improve, it is not a mysterious one. A team that reaches base five times all night is asking its home-run swings to do impossible work. San Francisco, by contrast, earned the right to view this as a solid win built on an early strike, a star turn from Gilbert, and enough pitching depth to keep Minnesota from ever turning those solo shots into a real comeback.
