Myles Price return and Will Reichard’s late long kicks lift Vikings past Buccaneers 23-16

The return that gave Minnesota daylight

The Vikings did not produce many clean offensive stretches, so the afternoon turned quickly to the phases that can swing an uneven game. Reichard opened the scoring with a 54-yard field goal, then Price broke it open for a moment with an 86-yard punt return that pushed Minnesota ahead 10-0 before the first quarter was half over.

Tampa Bay answered immediately enough to keep the game from tilting away. Baker Mayfield found Ted Hurst III for a 40-yard touchdown at 6:44 of the opening quarter, and from there the Buccaneers stayed within range because Chase McLaughlin matched Minnesota’s calm on special teams. He hit from 28, 38 and 54 yards, making every kick matter in a game where sustained offence was scarce.

The volume of kicking underlined the shape of the contest. Johnny Hekker punted eight times for Minnesota, Riley Dixon punted nine times for Tampa Bay, and both return units had their moments. Price added 132 kick-return yards to his touchdown on punts, while Kenny Gainwell gave the Buccaneers useful field position with 160 kick-return yards of his own. For long stretches, this was a game of exchanges rather than rhythm.

Addison supplied the only offensive touchdown Minnesota would need

After Tampa Bay cut the early deficit to three, McLaughlin’s 28-yarder tied the game at 10-10 with 5:33 left in the second quarter. Minnesota’s most important offensive play followed soon after. Kyler Murray hit Jordan Addison for a 41-yard touchdown at 4:11, restoring a seven-point edge and giving the Vikings their only offensive trip to the end zone.

That score stood up because Tampa Bay’s comeback never moved beyond field goals. McLaughlin trimmed the margin to 17-13 in the third quarter, then drilled a 54-yarder at 9:02 of the fourth to make it 17-16. The Buccaneers kept the scoreboard moving, but not fast enough. Every time they closed the gap, Minnesota still had a kick to answer with.

Reichard’s response was decisive. He stretched the lead back to four with a 56-yard field goal at 3:10 of the fourth quarter, then closed it with a 43-yarder with 33 seconds remaining. In a one-score game that lasted nearly all afternoon, Minnesota finished with the cleaner endgame: one explosive return early, one deep touchdown before halftime, and two long kicks when the tension peaked.

Our take: Minnesota’s defence covered for an offence that still has work to do

The box score reads like a warning for both offences. Minnesota managed only nine first downs and 230 total yards, went 2-for-15 on third down and took nine penalties for 95 yards. Tampa Bay was not much sharper, posting 11 first downs and 243 total yards while going 2-for-17 on third down. Put simply, neither side moved the chains often enough, and the punters were busy because of it.

Minnesota won because its defence gave the offence a margin for error Tampa Bay could not create for itself. The Vikings finished with six sacks and two interceptions, with Eric Wilson and Kyle Van Noy recording 1.5 sacks apiece and Blake Cashman adding another full sack. Andrew Van Ginkel and Isaiah Rodgers supplied the takeaways, and the broader result was clear: Tampa Bay went 0-for-2 in the red zone and 0-for-2 on fourth down. Those empty possessions mattered more than any yardage total.

There is no need to dress this up as an attacking clinic. Minnesota will take the result, but one offensive touchdown and no red-zone trips is not a formula to lean on every week. Tampa Bay, meanwhile, can point to a defence that kept the game alive and a kicker who was perfect, yet 57 rushing yards and six sacks allowed left too much on Mayfield’s shoulders. In a 23-16 game this tight, the difference was not style. It was the handful of high-value plays the Vikings made and the Buccaneers did not.
