Bowen Byram’s overtime hat trick carries Blackhawks past Wild 4-3 at United Center

Byram takes over the finish

Chicago’s win had one unmistakable author. Byram scored in the second period, struck again 24 seconds into the third, and then ended overtime at 0:29 with another wrist shot. For a game that kept wobbling away from the Blackhawks, his third goal gave it a clean ending. He finished with three goals, five shots and a plus-2 rating in 23:06, an outsized scoring load from the back end on a night when Chicago generated 20 shots total.

The overtime sequence matters because it completed a pattern rather than creating one from nowhere. Chicago had already leaned heavily on Byram’s finishing, and the final goal — assisted by Nick Lardis and Anton Frondell — made that dependence explicit. Lardis had tied the game in the first period at 8:40 with an unassisted wrist shot, then helped set up the winner. Between them, Lardis and Byram produced all four Chicago goals.

That concentration of offense can be read two ways. On one hand, it is a major positive that Chicago got game-breaking production from a defenseman and a young winger in the same game. On the other, it underlines how narrow the scoring spread was. Ryan Greene, Sam Rinzel, Alex Vlasic, Roman Kantserov and Frondell all contributed assists, but the finish itself came from only two sticks. On this night that was enough. It will not always be so tidy.

Minnesota’s replies kept coming

Minnesota made sure Chicago never had an easy version of this result. The Wild scored 15 seconds into the first period when Bobby Brink converted a tip-in off a David Spacek assist, and they twice fought back from deficits later in the night. After Byram pushed Chicago ahead 3-1 at 0:24 of the third, the Wild answered through Maxim Shabanov at 4:07, then drew level again when Brink scored his second at 11:29.

Brink was the sharpest Wild finisher, scoring twice on three shots. Shabanov added the other goal, with Yakov Trenin and Viking Gustafsson Nyberg picking up the assists. Minnesota’s offense was not overwhelming by volume — the Wild finished with 22 shots to Chicago’s 20 — but it was persistent enough to erase two separate one-goal gaps and then a two-goal hole. That kept pressure on Chicago’s goaltending all evening.

The frustration for Minnesota is that the comeback work still left an obvious opening unclaimed. The Wild went 0-for-2 on the power play and finished with nine giveaways. In a one-goal overtime loss, those are not abstract details. They are the kind of missed edges that follow a team out of the building. Minnesota also lost the faceoff battle by the slimmest margin, 23-22, which fits the shape of the night: close enough to stay alive, not quite clean enough to finish the job.

Our take: enough offense, not enough control

Our take: Chicago should enjoy the result, but not confuse it with defensive command. The Blackhawks won despite 13 giveaways and despite letting a 3-1 lead turn into 3-3 in the third period. Spencer Knight stopped 19 of 22 for an .864 save percentage, which meant Chicago needed that fourth goal. The best thing the Blackhawks did was answer Minnesota’s resilience with one more decisive play. The thing they can still sharpen is game management once they have a cushion.

That is especially true because special teams did not separate the game for either side. Chicago went 0-for-1 on the power play, Minnesota 0-for-2. With neither club finding a special-teams breakthrough, this became a game of finishing at even strength and surviving mistakes. Chicago survived because Byram’s shooting changed the scoreboard three times. Minnesota survived long enough to force overtime because Brink kept finding ways back into the game. The difference was not a broad statistical gap; it was the single biggest individual scoring performance on the sheet.

For the Wild, the path forward is easier to identify than to solve. More from the power play is the clearest place to look first, simply because two chances produced nothing in a game decided by one goal. Cleaner puck decisions would help too, although Chicago had its own turnover problems. For the Blackhawks, the lesson is almost the mirror image: the attack from Byram and Lardis was real and valuable, but the late defensive looseness means this win reads better as a showcase for top-end finishing than as a fully convincing team performance. Chicago gets the two points from the night; Byram gets the memory from it.
