Cole Perfetti’s two goals help Jets turn wild first period into 5-2 win over Wild

Winnipeg let an early lead disappear, then rebuilt the game on its terms. Cole Perfetti scored twice, Mark Scheifele had a goal and two assists, and the Jets pulled away from the Minnesota Wild for a 5-2 win at Canada Life Centre.

A first period that refused to settle

The game was only 1:50 old when Winnipeg opened the scoring. Perfetti got his stick on a puck in front for a tip-in, with Neal Pionk and Scheifele combining on the setup. It looked like the start of a comfortable home night, but Minnesota answered before the period was half gone.

Kirill Kaprizov tied it at 8:47 on an unassisted batted goal, the first sign that nearly every clean finish in the opening frame was going to matter. Winnipeg reclaimed the lead at 17:54 when Scheifele snapped home a chance created by Pionk and Kyle Connor. That edge lasted all of 44 seconds. Kaprizov struck again at 18:38, this time tipping in a puck from Quinn Hughes and Jonas Brodin to send the teams to intermission level at 2-2.

That exchange gave the night its shape. Minnesota had its star winger producing both goals, while Winnipeg had more of its top offensive names on the scoresheet. The difference was that the Jets kept finding secondary touches around those finishes, and that depth of involvement showed up again later.

Perfetti breaks the tie, Winnipeg finishes the job

For most of the second period, the score held where the first had left it. Then Perfetti delivered the swing that changed the night. At 16:36, he snapped in his second goal of the game off feeds from Gabriel Vilardi and Scheifele, restoring Winnipeg’s lead at 3-2 and giving the Jets their third different scoring combination of the evening.

That goal stood as the game-winner. Winnipeg carried the one-goal edge into the third period and then turned it into breathing room with two more goals. The detailed scorer information provided here stops before those final two Winnipeg strikes, but the period totals are clear: the Jets won the third 2-0 and converted a tight game into a three-goal result.

Minnesota never found a reply after Kaprizov’s second goal late in the first. The Wild finished with 16 shots in the game, and once the score was tied 2-2 they could not produce the next moment. Winnipeg, by contrast, kept its best playmakers involved. Scheifele figured in three goals, Pionk assisted on the opening two Winnipeg markers, and Perfetti supplied the finishing touch the game required.

Our take: enough finish from Winnipeg, not enough support for Kaprizov

A 5-2 scoreline can suggest control, but this game was closer than that for a long stretch. Winnipeg’s separation came from what it did with its chances, not from overwhelming territorial indicators across the board. The Jets were outdrawn on faceoffs, winning only 42.9 per cent, and they were outhit 20-15. They also finished with 12 giveaways. Those numbers leave room for a cleaner performance, even in a win.

What Winnipeg did better was convert the moments that carried the most weight. The Jets went 1-for-2 on the power play while Minnesota went 0-for-2, and that special-teams gap mattered in a game where the Wild generated only 16 shots overall. When a team gets two goals from Kaprizov and still loses by three, the problem usually sits in the lack of follow-up scoring and the inability to extend pressure into later periods. That was the shape of this result.

For Minnesota, the immediate area to fix is straightforward. Kaprizov supplied all the offence, but the Wild needed more from the rest of the lineup and more from a power play that got two chances and produced nothing. Winning 57.1 per cent of the draws gave them a platform; failing to turn that edge into sustained offence left too much on one player’s shoulders.

For Winnipeg, the encouraging part is that the headline names drove the win without the team needing perfect underlying numbers. Perfetti finished twice, Scheifele ran the middle of the attack, and Pionk’s early passing helped establish the tempo of the opening period. If the Jets can pair that kind of finishing with better puck management, nights like this will feel less volatile than the first period suggested.
