Lightning’s first-period burst holds up in 2-1 win over Predators

Tampa Bay struck first at 1:33 of the opening period when Ilya Mikheyev scored on a tip-in, with John Carlson and Brayden Point collecting the assists. It was the kind of start that can simplify a night, especially for a team that would later spend plenty of time killing penalties instead of extending its lead.

Nashville answered at 7:39, and the response mattered because it prevented the game from settling into a one-way script. Brady Martin tied it 1-1 on a snap shot, set up by Reid Schaefer and Jack Ahcan. For a Predators team that would finish with only 13 shots, that equalizer gave real value to one of its few successful attacking sequences.

The winner came before the first intermission had ended. Conor Geekie restored the Lightning lead at 15:31 of the first, finishing a play from Sam O'Reilly for what turned out to be the decisive goal. After that, the scoreboard went silent for 44:29. Tampa Bay still finished with the better shot total, 22-13, and that edge gave Andrei Vasilevskiy a lighter workload than Juuse Saros, who faced 22 shots and stopped 20 of them to keep Nashville within one.

Penalty parade, empty power plays

If the first period provided the scoring, the rest of the game supplied the clutter. The teams combined for 19 penalties and 70 penalty minutes, yet neither side made the special teams ledger move. Nashville went 0-for-6 on the power play, while Tampa Bay finished 0-for-4. That is a lot of extra-man time to produce nothing, and it helps explain why a game with so many interruptions never found an offensive rhythm after the early burst.

The faceoff numbers tell an important part of the story. Tampa Bay won 65 percent of the draws, 26 faceoff wins to Nashville’s 14. In a game full of special-teams situations, that kind of advantage matters because it decides who begins more of those possessions with control. Anthony Cirelli won 72.7 percent of his draws, Brayden Point was at 70 percent, and O’Reilly checked in at 75 percent. Nashville, by contrast, got only 16.7 percent from Tyson Jost and 27.3 percent from Martin at the dot.

Our take: Nashville’s first fix should be a practical one, not a dramatic one. When a team gets six power plays but manages only 13 shots for the entire game while losing 65-35 on faceoffs, there is a possession problem to solve before anything else. Tampa Bay has its own warning label from this result too. Winning despite 36 penalty minutes is useful in the short term; repeating that formula is risky. The Lightning handed Nashville six chances with the extra skater and then went scoreless on four power plays of their own, so discipline and cleaner special-teams execution remain obvious areas to sharpen.

A one-goal game with very specific fingerprints

The Lightning did not need a long list of point producers, but the ones they had were decisive. Mikheyev’s tip-in opened the scoring, Geekie supplied the winner, and the supporting touches came from Carlson, Point and O’Reilly. Carlson’s assist added to a night in which he logged 21:56, the highest ice time among Tampa Bay skaters, and Tampa Bay’s centers helped tilt the game with their work on draws even when the power play failed to cash in.

Nashville’s best work came in the form of resistance. Martin scored the Predators’ only goal, Schaefer and Ahcan set it up, and Saros made sure the margin never grew beyond one by stopping 20 of 22 shots. The Predators also blocked 18 shots, with Andrew Gibson recording six and Ahcan adding two. That is not the profile of a team getting run over; it is the profile of a team that stayed organized enough defensively to keep the outcome in reach.

Our take: this was a narrow game, but not an especially mysterious one. Tampa Bay earned its edge early, owned the faceoff circle and generated more overall offense, which is usually enough in a 2-1 result. Nashville can take something from the way it defended and from Saros keeping the contest close, but the offensive math was simply too thin. Thirteen shots and an 0-for-6 power play leave almost no room for error. For the Lightning, the encouraging part is that the game management held once the lead was reclaimed. The caution is that a night with 10 team penalties and no power-play goals still leaves plenty to clean up, even in a win.
