Jahmyr Gibbs answers late Jets rally as Lions hold on for 31-24 win

A tie that lasted 101 seconds

The game stayed quiet through the opening quarter, then turned sharply in the second. Jake Bates put Detroit ahead with a 30-yard field goal at 9:35, but the Jets answered at 5:33 when Geno Smith found Kenyon Sadiq for a 24-yard touchdown. Detroit reclaimed control before halftime on Jared Goff's four-yard touchdown pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown with 1:36 left in the quarter, sending the Lions into the break up 10-7.

Detroit widened that margin in the third. Gibbs broke loose for a 17-yard touchdown run at 10:56, and although Jason Sanders kept New York within reach with a 42-yard field goal at 6:22, the Lions opened the fourth quarter with another Gibbs score, this time from one yard out, to move ahead 24-10 with 14:57 remaining.

That looked like a comfortable cushion until the Jets came alive through the air. Smith hit Jeremy Ruckert for a four-yard touchdown at 11:17, though the two-point pass failed. New York kept coming, and with 4:06 left Smith connected with Garrett Wilson for a 23-yard score before finding Sterling Shepard on the two-point conversion to force a 24-24 tie. The deadlock barely had time to settle. Just 101 seconds later, Goff found Gibbs from 11 yards for the touchdown that settled it at 31-24.

Gibbs kept showing up

Detroit's offence had a clear centre of gravity, and it was Gibbs. He carried 20 times for 99 yards and two rushing touchdowns, then added seven catches and the winning score through the air. The Lions used him as both their finisher near the goal line and their late-game solution when the tie demanded one more clean play.

Goff gave that versatility room to matter. He completed 25 of 32 passes, threw two touchdowns, avoided interceptions and took only two sacks. Detroit finished with 383 total yards, 24 first downs and 133 rushing yards, numbers that show an offence with more than one way to keep moving. The Lions also converted four of five red-zone trips into scores, a decisive edge in a game where neither side gave the ball away.

The passing game around Gibbs stayed broad enough to keep New York from leaning on one target. Isaac TeSlaa stretched the field on only three catches, Jameson Williams and Sam LaPorta were regular parts of the completion list, and St. Brown turned one of his four receptions into the touchdown that restored Detroit's lead before halftime. When the Lions needed one more scoring play late, that spread of contributors left them with options instead of panic.

New York had answers through the air, but not enough balance

The Jets did plenty right, especially once Smith started finding the end zone. He completed 25 of 30 passes with three touchdowns and no interceptions, an efficient line that nearly stole the afternoon. Wilson, Sadiq and Ruckert each caught touchdown passes, and Wilson was credited with nine receptions as New York repeatedly found a way back onto the scoreboard.

What the Jets could not build was a dependable second track beside that passing game. They finished with 58 rushing yards on 19 attempts, and Detroit's front produced four sacks. DJ Wonnum accounted for two of them, Alim McNeill added one, and Aidan Hutchinson and Skyler Gill-Howard split another. In a game without turnovers, losing ground on rushing production and pass protection left New York needing its quarterback to be nearly perfect.

The raw team line still shows how close the Jets came. They posted 311 total yards on 53 plays, averaged 5.9 yards per snap and turned two of three red-zone trips into touchdowns. That is enough offence to win some Sundays. Against Detroit, it left almost no margin once the Lions answered with stronger work near the goal line and one final touchdown of their own.

Our take

Detroit's win was not about one overwhelming statistical gap. It was about stacking a handful of smaller advantages until they became the difference on the scoreboard. The Lions ran better, finished better in the red zone and stayed just clean enough in protection to let Goff operate. In a turnover-free game, those details mattered more than any single highlight until Gibbs supplied the last one.

For the Jets, there is encouragement in how sharp Smith looked and in the fact they could wipe out a 24-10 deficit without the help of a takeaway. But if New York wants that kind of rally to end in a win, the offence probably needs more support from the ground game than 58 rushing yards and more protection than four sacks allowed. Detroit, meanwhile, should not ignore how quickly a two-score lead disappeared. The Lions survived that lesson because Gibbs touched the game everywhere it mattered most.
