Two swings in a tiny game

His line was sturdy: 6.0 innings, three hits, two earned runs, two walks and seven strikeouts. Strip away the two pitches that left the yard, and he gave the Yankees very little. Yet those were the only pitches that truly counted, and that is sometimes the whole story of a 2-0 baseball game. The Yankees did not build a parade of traffic; they took two mistakes, or at least two hittable offerings, and turned them directly into runs.

Schlittler made the Mets play uphill

If Scott was unlucky, Cam Schlittler was authoritative. The Yankees starter worked 6.0 innings and allowed just one hit, with two walks and eight strikeouts on 94 pitches. The Mets did make him work to that number, but they did not solve him. One hit in six innings means most of their afternoon against the starter was spent resetting counts, surviving strikeouts, and waiting for an opening that never really arrived.

The rest was handled cleanly. Brent Headrick followed with a scoreless seventh, Paul Blackburn a scoreless eighth, and David Bednar closed the ninth for the save. Over the full nine innings, Yankees pitchers allowed only three hits and two walks while striking out 10. That combination explains why the Mets could not cash in even the little they created. A lineup can survive a quiet middle stretch if it strings together a burst somewhere; New York's National League club never found one.

Too many empty plate appearances on both sides

The Mets' offensive line tells you why the shutout held. They went 3-for-30, posted a .156 on-base percentage, and left nine runners on base. Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto, two names usually expected to move a game, combined to go 0-for-7 with one walk and four strikeouts. Bo Bichette, Francisco Alvarez and Brett Baty supplied the three hits, but no sequence ever became large enough to dent the Yankees' pitching plan. The Mets did see 141 pitches, which suggests some willingness to extend at-bats, yet that patience never turned into sustained damage because the contact simply was not there.

The Yankees should not read this as a fully settled offensive afternoon, either. They also finished with just three hits and spent much of the game searching for clean contact. Aaron Judge went 0-for-3 and struck out three times, while Cody Bellinger was 0-for-4. Outside the two home runs and Spencer Jones' lone hit, the lineup did not offer much hard evidence of flow. Four walks helped, but so did the fact that both scoring swings cleared the fence. If there is a caution inside a win, it is that seven runners were still left on base and one rally disappeared into a double play. On another day, two solo shots may not be enough.

Our take: this was a power-and-prevention win

The cleanest reading of this result is also the simplest: the Yankees won the game where baseball often turns hardest. They missed more bats, allowed fewer baserunners, and turned two of their three hits into runs. That is not a lush offensive performance, but it is an efficient one, and efficiency was the only luxury available in a game this tight. Rice deserves extra notice here, not only for the homer but for adding two walks, because he was one of the few Yankees who consistently created pressure without needing a string of team-wide contact behind him.

For the Mets, the disappointment should center less on the pitching than on how little support it received. Scott's six innings and seven strikeouts were good enough to keep the afternoon manageable; the offense made manageable feel impossible. Our take is that the practical adjustment is straightforward, even if not easy: convert some of those long plate appearances into more balls in play when runners do reach. The evidence is right there in the line score and totals — 32 plate appearances, 141 pitches seen, only three hits, and nine runners left aboard. The Yankees walked away with the win because their two decisive swings arrived early and their pitching never offered a reply. In a 2-0 game, that is all the explanation required.
