Mets erase Texas’s early edge with a three-run sixth and pull away 6-3 at Globe Life Field

Texas had the lead, briefly

The early exchanges made this look like a game the Rangers could steal with efficiency. New York struck first in the third when Juan Soto singled to center to bring home Francisco Alvarez, but Texas answered in the bottom half. Josh Jung doubled to right and scored Danny Jansen, wiping out the Mets’ first lead almost as soon as it arrived.

The fourth inning was busier and stranger. The Mets moved back in front when Carson Benge scored on a fielding error charged to right fielder Brandon Nimmo, with Alvarez reaching safely and taking second on the same play. Texas responded more cleanly than forcefully. Elias Díaz lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score Nimmo, and Wyatt Langford followed with another sacrifice fly that brought home Ezequiel Duran. After four innings, the Rangers led 3-2 despite managing only three hits all night.

That advantage did not survive the middle innings. The fifth passed without scoring, then the Mets took the game with a three-run sixth and added one more in the seventh. Those two innings turned a one-run Texas lead into a 6-3 New York cushion, and the Rangers never put another run on the board. When a team goes quiet for the final five innings, a narrow early lead stops looking like control and starts looking like a missed opportunity.

Manaea kept the game close enough to change

Sean Manaea’s outing deserves careful reading. He worked only 5.0 innings and left having allowed three runs, but two details matter: Texas produced just three hits against him, and he struck out nine. That is a substantial amount of swing-and-miss in a short start. The Rangers’ only extra-base hit against him was Jung’s RBI double, and two of their runs came home on sacrifice flies rather than another hit. Even while trailing after four, New York was still very much alive because Manaea prevented the game from getting loose.

MacKenzie Gore gave Texas a solid five innings of his own, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts. But the Mets did enough against him to stay attached. Soto’s two-hit night set the tone, Alvarez crossed the plate once and helped create another run, and Benge reached and scored. Just as important, New York did not give away many plate appearances. The Mets struck out only twice as a team, a sharp contrast with the Rangers’ nine strikeouts, and that difference hung over the game once it moved beyond the first few innings.

There is a simple truth in that contrast: one lineup kept forcing contact, while the other kept running into outs without advancing the game. Texas found two sacrifice flies and one RBI double. New York found the later surge that actually changed the scoreline. That is why a close game through five became a Mets win by three.

Our take: this was a composed Mets comeback more than a thunderclap. New York did not bury Texas early, and it did not need a home-run barrage to win. It stayed in the game, limited its strikeouts, and made the sixth inning decisive. The Rangers, by contrast, asked too much of a thin offensive line. Three runs from three hits can carry you only so far if the bats go silent afterward.

For Texas, the clearest area to sharpen is turning traffic into actual damage. The Rangers drew two walks, were hit by two pitches, and still finished with 11 runners left on base. Their scoring came from Jung’s double and two sacrifice flies, which means the lineup created some pressure without ever stringing together enough hard results. On a night with only three hits, one more timely ball in play after the fourth inning could have changed the entire shape of the result.

For the Mets, the improvement case is different. A win usually softens everything, but allowing three runs on three hits shows how expensive small mistakes can be. New York was charged with an error, and Texas also benefited from free baserunners through walks and hit batters. When the Rangers score without needing many hits, that is a reminder that cleaner defense and fewer giveaways would make a pitcher like Manaea’s strikeout-heavy work hold even more value. Still, the lasting image from this one is straightforward: the Rangers had the lead, the Mets had the better answer, and the three-run sixth decided which side left Globe Life Field in control.
