Josh Jung’s quick answer and Corey Seager’s insurance lift Rangers past Mets 3-1

The answer came immediately

The Mets did what road clubs hope to do in a tight park against a talented arm: they struck first. Francisco Lindor came around on Carson Benge’s single to right in the first inning, and for a brief moment New York had control of the script. In a game where offense was going to be scarce, that early run mattered.

It just did not last long. Texas erased the deficit in the bottom half when Josh Jung drove a 369-foot homer to left, bringing Justin Foscue home with him. That swing did more than flip the scoreboard from 1-0 Mets to 2-1 Rangers. It established the game’s theme: New York would have to piece together traffic, while Texas had the power to settle matters in one clean strike.

That contrast held for the rest of the night. The Mets finished with four hits, two walks and no home runs. The Rangers managed seven hits and three walks, and two of those hits left the yard. In a 3-1 result, that difference is not just statistical texture; it is the whole reason the evening tilted toward Texas.

Rocker starts it, the bullpen seals it

Kumar Rocker did not need to dominate to matter. Five innings, three hits, one earned run, two walks and four strikeouts was exactly the sort of line Texas needed once Jung had supplied the lead. Rocker limited the damage to that opening inning and kept the Mets from building a second wave.

The more impressive part for Texas may have been the handoff. Robert Garcia, Tyler Alexander, Chase Silseth and Jordan Montgomery covered the final four innings without allowing a run. Silseth struck out two in his inning, Montgomery handled the ninth for the save, and together the Rangers’ staff held New York to a .138 team average and six total bases.

That bullpen sequence deserves emphasis because the Mets were not completely absent offensively; they just never sustained enough. Lindor scored the only run, Benge drove it in, and Brett Baty and Nick Morabito added the other hits. But four hits across 29 at-bats, alongside eight runners left on base, left New York needing near-perfect run prevention after the first inning. Against a club that already had the lead and a rested path through the late innings, that is a hard bargain.

Our take: efficient power won, but both teams left work behind

From the Mets’ side, this looks like a frustratingly familiar kind of losing formula: solid enough pitching to stay in the game, not enough offense to pressure the other dugout. Zac Thornton gave them five innings and allowed only four hits, but one of them was Jung’s two-run shot. Austin Warren and Jack Weisenburger later combined for 2.1 scoreless innings, so New York cannot pin everything on the staff. The sharper fix is at the plate. When a lineup produces four hits, no extra runners from hit-by-pitches and only a .194 on-base percentage, it has to find more ways to extend innings before the middle frames disappear.

Texas, though, should leave with more than relief. The Rangers won because the most dangerous contact was theirs. Jung went 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs, Seager added the sixth-inning insurance homer, and Wyatt Langford chipped in two hits. That is enough star production to carry a narrow game. Still, there is room for refinement. Texas left 12 on base and had two runners caught stealing, signs that a 3-1 victory could have been cleaner if more of those chances had been converted or protected.

So the result feels fair and instructive. The Mets opened the scoring, but they never found the second punch. The Rangers were hardly relentless from first inning to last, yet they owned the game’s two loudest swings and paired them with nine sturdy innings of pitching. In September baseball, that combination often reads like a simple equation: a quick answer, one insurance blast, and no invitation back into the game.
