Bruins turn a scoreless grind into a 75-second third-period surge to blank Rangers

A deadlock built on contact, blocks and goaltending

This game spent most of the night looking as if one clean touch might settle it. Boston and New York were scoreless through two periods, neither side found a power-play goal on its lone opportunity, and even the faceoff battle finished perfectly level at 26 wins apiece. The shot count ended almost even too, with the Rangers at 24 and the Bruins at 23, which fit the feel of a matchup decided by very small margins.

It was also a hard, busy game long before it became a high-scoring one. The Rangers recorded 37 hits and the Bruins 36, with Matt Rempe throwing six for New York and Nikita Zadorov delivering eight for Boston. Those numbers help explain why space stayed scarce. Boston also blocked 16 shots to New York’s 12, another sign that the attacking team usually had to work through traffic before it could test a goaltender cleanly.

Jeremy Swayman was the last line Boston needed. He stopped all 24 Rangers shots for the shutout, including New York attempts from a few different sticks rather than one dominant scorer. Pavel Dorofeyev led the Rangers with five shots, Oliver Bjorkstrand had four, and J.T. Miller and Mika Zibanejad added two apiece. Igor Shesterkin was nearly as sharp at the other end for most of the night, turning aside 20 of 23 and keeping the Bruins frustrated deep into the third.

Minten opens the seam, then Boston pours through it

The first break finally arrived at 16:14 of the third period. Fraser Minten snapped Boston in front 1-0, with Mason Lohrei collecting the lone assist. After 56 minutes of stalemate, that one finish changed the terms of the night immediately. Instead of chasing a single opening, the Bruins were suddenly playing with a lead and the Rangers were forced to answer in a game that had offered very few easy answers.

New York barely had time to absorb the first goal before the second followed. Just 52 seconds later, at 17:06, John-Jason Peterka made it 2-0 on a snap shot assisted by Elias Lindholm and Hampus Lindholm. Then the Bruins struck again 23 seconds after that. At 17:29, Mark Kastelic added a third goal, also on a snap shot, with Minten and Marat Khusnutdinov credited on the setup.

That 75-second surge turned an evenly played game into a decisive scoreline. Minten finished with a goal and an assist, Peterka supplied the middle strike that widened the gap in a hurry, and Kastelic capped the sequence. For Boston, it was an abrupt reward after a long night of waiting. For the Rangers, it was the kind of collapse in concentration that can erase 56 strong minutes almost at once.

Our take: Boston won the small-error game

A 3-0 final can read like control from start to finish, but this one was tighter and more interesting than that. Boston did not win on volume. The Bruins were outshot 24-23, split the draws right down the middle, and matched New York’s scoreless special-teams line at 0-for-1. The clearer edge came in the details that keep a low-event game from tilting the wrong way. Boston was charged with 10 giveaways; New York had 19. In a night with so little separation elsewhere, that cleaner puck management mattered.

The Bruins still have room to make their attack less dependent on a late burst. Twenty-three shots is enough to win when Swayman posts a shutout, but it is not overwhelming production, and the power play did not cash its only chance. Even so, Boston’s balance was encouraging. Minten delivered a two-point night, Peterka and Kastelic finished their chances, and the back end chipped in with assists from Lohrei and Hampus Lindholm while continuing to block shots.

For the Rangers, the stat line points less to a lack of effort than to a lack of finish and polish. They matched Boston physically, held a slight edge in shots, and stayed alive behind Shesterkin for most of the game. But 19 giveaways leave too many loose moments in a game this tight, and a shutout loss means the chance generation that did appear was never enough to beat Swayman. New York did enough to keep the game level for a long stretch. Boston did the more valuable thing: when the opening came, it ended the contest before the Rangers could recover.
