Capitals turn second period around, beat Rangers 3-1 after Lafrenière opener

Washington absorbed an early New York goal, took control in the second period and finished a 3-1 win Friday night at Capital One Arena, with Timothy Liljegren, Boone Jenner and Tom Wilson supplying the scoring and Logan Thompson stopping 21 of 22 shots.

New York struck first, but could not build on it

The Rangers had the cleaner start on the scoreboard. Alexis Lafrenière opened the night at 10:17 of the first period, beating Logan Thompson with a snap shot after J.T. Miller and Pavel Dorofeyev combined on the setup. It was Lafrenière’s fourth goal of the season and, for a while, it looked like the kind of first-period finish that could let New York dictate the night.

What followed was less convincing for the visitors. New York won more faceoffs, finishing at 53.7 per cent, and it delivered the heavier game with a 35-22 edge in hits, but the attack did not expand beyond that early breakthrough. Thompson settled in quickly, Washington got in front of 12 shots, and the Rangers finished with 22 shots on goal in all. For a team that had the lead and enough puck drops going its way, that was not much separation.

Liljegren changed the scoreline, Jenner changed the game

Washington’s response came in the second period and it came from the back end. Timothy Liljegren tied the game 1-1 at 6:08 with a slap shot, with Dylan Strome and Ryan Leonard collecting the assists. The goal was Liljegren’s first of the season, and it did more than erase the deficit: it shifted the night away from New York’s patient first-period control and toward a Capitals group that was suddenly getting rewarded for pushing play back the other way.

The Rangers still had time to steady themselves before the intermission, but Boone Jenner took that option away. Jenner scored unassisted at 17:38 of the second to put Washington in front 2-1, giving the Capitals their first lead of the night. With Liljegren’s equalizer and Jenner’s finish, Washington had turned a one-goal hole into a one-goal advantage within a single period.

From there, the third period became a test of whether New York could produce a second answer. It never came. Wilson supplied the final goal at 19:59 of the third, scoring with a wrist shot off a Vincent Desharnais assist to make it 3-1. The late finish gave Washington three different goal scorers and underlined the part of the game New York could not solve after the opening 10 minutes: once the Capitals recovered, they kept finding the next important play.

Washington’s support work showed up on the scoresheet

Thompson was the most obvious stabilizer. He finished with 21 saves and a .955 save percentage, and Washington needed that level because the game was not flawless elsewhere. The Capitals were charged with 19 giveaways, a number that usually invites trouble, but Thompson’s night and the work in front of him kept those mistakes from becoming a bigger story.

The blue line helped carry that support. Liljegren scored the equalizer, Desharnais added the assist on Wilson’s goal, and Jakob Chychrun led Washington in ice time at 26:53. Martin Fehervary logged 23:57 and blocked four shots, while Desharnais paired his assist with three blocked shots and four hits. Washington did not need one overwhelming individual performance to win this; it got enough contributions from enough places.

New York, by contrast, had useful individual numbers without the collective payoff. Dorofeyev put four shots on goal and assisted on Lafrenière’s opener. Mika Zibanejad went 13-for-20 on faceoffs, good for 65 per cent. Dylan Garand and Igor Shesterkin combined for 24 saves. Those are not empty numbers, but they sat beside a long scoring drought and a minus night for several top Rangers skaters. When a team scores once, the supporting details tend to look isolated rather than connected.

Our take: the Capitals were sharper in the moments that decided it

This result was not about overwhelming statistical dominance. The Rangers won more draws, hit more often and killed all three Washington power plays. The Capitals, meanwhile, left room for criticism with 19 giveaways and an 0-for-3 night on their own power play. But Washington was better in the moments that actually swung the game: it answered quickly enough after falling behind, got an equalizer from its defence, found a go-ahead goal before the second intermission and protected the lead behind strong goaltending.

For New York, the obvious area to revisit is even-strength finish. The Rangers scored at 10:17 of the first period and then went the final 49:43 without another goal. A team can survive an ordinary night on special teams if five-on-five offence keeps arriving; this time it did not. Washington’s takeaway is a happier one, though not a perfect one: the Capitals created a little more, finished a little better and proved they can win a game in which the stars do not have to own every line of the headline.
