A slow burn until the bats arrived
The Yankees struck first in the third when Jose Caballero drove a solo homer to left, and for a long stretch that was the whole story on the scoreboard. New York had only two hits through Dean Kremer’s 5.2 innings, while Minnesota spent much of the night threatening without cashing in cleanly against Will Warren.
Warren’s line was a little unusual and, in its own way, revealing: 5.2 innings, five hits, two runs, none earned, with two walks and six strikeouts. That tells the story of a starter who gave the Twins chances but kept the damage limited, even as the Yankees’ defense made life harder than it needed to. New York finished with three errors, and Minnesota’s first lead came in the middle of that sloppiness rather than from a barrage of hard contact.
Kremer deserved better than to be remembered only as the pitcher on the wrong end of the final score. He held the Yankees to one run on two hits, walked one and struck out five. If this game had ended 2-1 or 3-1, his outing would have been the centerpiece. Instead, it became the quiet foundation under a game that eventually veered somewhere else entirely.
Minnesota’s opening, and the missed chance inside it
The Twins finally moved ahead in the sixth, and Emmanuel Rodriguez did the heavy lifting. His triple to center scored Kody Clemens and Josh Bell, flipping a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 Minnesota lead. At that point, the home side had the game where it wanted it: low-scoring, narrow, and asking the Yankees to manufacture offense late.
But the box score leaves an unmistakable note beside that brief advantage. Minnesota finished with six hits, four walks and a hit batter, yet scored only three runs and stranded 19 runners. Two ground-into-double-plays also cut into innings that might have grown larger. Bell did his part with two hits, two runs and a home run later on, and Rodriguez delivered the biggest hit the Twins had all night, but the offense never stretched the game when New York was still vulnerable.
That matters because against a lineup with this much power, a one-run lead can feel smaller than it looks. The Twins had the Yankees off balance often enough to create traffic; they just did not create enough separation before the late innings arrived.
The inning that erased the game
Everything turned in the eighth, and it turned fast. Caballero opened the scoring in that inning too, this time with a single to center that brought home George Lombard Jr. and tied the game at 2-2. Ben Rice followed with another single to center, scoring Anthony Volpe and Caballero for a 4-2 Yankees lead. Then Aaron Judge supplied the knockout swing, a three-run homer to left that scored Rice and Cody Bellinger and pushed the margin to 7-2.
That inning was less a rally than a collapse of containment. Andrew Morris recorded only one out while allowing three hits and three runs. A.J. Minter did not record an out and was charged with three hits and three runs of his own. In a game that had been defined by restraint, the Twins suddenly could not stop the ball from finding grass or clearing the wall.
Caballero’s night was the shape of the Yankees’ offense in miniature: two hits, two runs, two RBI, one stolen base, and pressure on the game from different angles. Rice added two hits and two RBI. Judge had only one hit, but when that one hit is a three-run homer, the line still bends around him. Austin Wells then added a solo homer in the ninth, the Yankees’ third long ball of the night, and Bell’s solo shot in the bottom of the eighth served mostly as a reminder that Minnesota had run out of time rather than swings.
Our take: power covered mistakes, but both clubs left notes for themselves
Our take: this was a useful example of how a powerful offense can rescue an otherwise untidy night. The Yankees scored eight runs on nine hits despite drawing only one walk and committing three errors. That is not a formula to count on every time, but it worked here because three of the nine hits left the yard and because the eighth inning turned every baserunner into trouble. When a team can get that kind of lift from Caballero at the top of the scoring sheet and still have Judge waiting behind him, close games remain flammable.
The improvement point for New York is straightforward because the evidence is straightforward: cleaner defense. Three errors helped turn two Minnesota runs into unearned ones, and against a sharper finishing offense that kind of looseness might have cost more than a few anxious innings. For the Twins, the lesson is almost the mirror image. Their pitchers struck out nine and walked only one, and Kremer gave them a winning-caliber start, but the staff allowed three home runs and the offense left 19 men on base. When a game is sitting there in the sixth and seventh the way this one was, that combination is hard to survive.
So the result feels fair, even if the route to it was lopsided late. Minnesota played well enough for long stretches to imagine a different ending. The Yankees, though, owned the most decisive swings, and in baseball that can make seven careful innings disappear in the space of one damaging frame.
