Rays punish four Yankees errors and ride a four-run fifth to 5-2 win

Rice answered, but the tie did not last

Tampa Bay’s first run arrived without a clean hit doing the damage. In the opening inning, Junior Caminero hit a fielder’s choice to short, Yandy Díaz came home, and the play was extended by a throwing error from second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. Jonathan Aranda was retired at second, but the Rays had an early 1-0 lead and New York had already opened the door.

Rice pulled the Yankees level in the fourth with a solo shot to right measured at 372 feet. For a moment, that looked like the kind of swing that could settle a thin offensive night. New York was not creating much beyond that, but at 1-1 the game was still within reach.

The turning point came an inning later. Liam Hicks grounded out to second to score Aranda and move Caminero to third. Chandler Simpson then reached on a fielder’s choice that brought home Caminero, and Richie Palacios followed with the biggest hit of the night, a single to centre that scored both Simpson and Jonny DeLuca. In a span of three scoring plays, the Rays moved from a tie game to a 5-1 cushion.

Tampa Bay’s staff left little room for a comeback

Rice did strike again in the eighth, sending another solo homer to right, this one measured at 358 feet, to cut the deficit to 5-2. That was the full extent of the Yankees offence. They finished with four hits, two walks and seven strikeouts, and Rice alone supplied two hits, both runs and both RBIs in a 2-for-3 night with a walk.

Freddy Peralta gave the Rays the start they needed, allowing one run on three hits over 4 2/3 innings while striking out three. Cam Booser collected the final out of the fifth, and Ian Seymour handled the middle-to-late innings with authority, striking out four over three innings while yielding only Rice’s second homer. Bryan Baker added a scoreless inning to finish the job.

That work on the mound was matched by crisp defence behind it. Tampa Bay committed no errors, and that mattered in a game where neither lineup piled up extra-base damage. The Rays had eight hits to New York’s four, and their pitchers held the rest of the Yankees lineup in check even as Rice kept threatening to change the script with one swing.

Our take: clean baseball was the difference

For New York, this is the kind of loss that points first to execution rather than overpowering opposition. The Yankees gave up five runs, but only two were earned, and the Rays did not hit a home run. When the opponent scores that way and still wins by three, the defensive line demands attention. Four errors is simply too much to survive against a team that keeps the ball moving.

The Yankees’ pitching line was not dominant, but it was workable. Cam Schlittler went 4 1/3 innings and was charged with four runs, only two earned, and the bullpen was steadier after the fifth. John Schreiber, Ryan Weathers, Paul Blackburn and David Bednar combined to cover the final three innings with just one hit allowed. That should have kept the game from getting away; the problem was that the offence never offered enough support.

Tampa Bay, meanwhile, won with a practical formula. The Rays finished with eight hits, stole three bases and played error-free baseball. That is not an overwhelming offensive explosion, but it is a reliable path when the other side is giving away chances. If there is a note of caution for the Rays, it is that even with those baserunners they still needed New York’s messy fifth inning to create real separation. For one night, though, clean play and timely contact were more than enough.
