Chabot starts it, Halliday settles it as Senators edge Maple Leafs 3-2

Ottawa answered every Toronto push Saturday night at Scotiabank Arena, then got the deciding goal from Stephen Halliday in the third period to beat the Maple Leafs 3-2.

Toronto’s quick turn lasted less than half a period

For most of the first 40 minutes, the game swung in sharp bursts. Ottawa struck first at 18:51 of the opening period when Thomas Chabot beat Sergei Bobrovsky with a wrist shot, with Claude Giroux and Shane Pinto collecting the assists. It was the kind of late-period goal that can change the feel of a night, especially in a game that eventually finished with the teams level on 29 shots each.

Toronto erased that deficit almost immediately in the second. Auston Matthews redirected a tip-in just 33 seconds into the period from Morgan Rielly and William Nylander, then Kirill Marchenko put the Maple Leafs ahead 2-1 at 7:06 with a backhand finish set up by Darren Raddysh and John Tavares. In the space of 6:33, Toronto had turned a quiet start into a lead.

The important detail for Ottawa was how quickly it answered. Michael Amadio tied the game at 12:40 of the second on a wrist shot from Tim Stützle and Chabot, wiping out the Leafs’ best stretch before the game could tilt further. Instead of spending the third period chasing, the Senators reset the night at 2-2 and gave themselves a single-goal race over the final 20 minutes.

Halliday finishes what Chabot and Giroux began

The winner arrived at 9:46 of the third period. Stephen Halliday snapped Ottawa back in front, taking helpers from Fabian Zetterlund and Giroux for the 3-2 goal that held up the rest of the way. That sequence mattered beyond the scoreline: Ottawa’s opener came from a veteran defenceman, the equalizer from a depth forward, and the decider from Halliday. The offence was spread out enough that Toronto never had one matchup to solve.

Chabot was at the centre of the Senators’ best work. He finished with a goal and an assist, logged 27:06, and blocked seven shots, the highest total among Ottawa skaters listed. Giroux added two assists and dominated at the faceoff dot, winning 10 of 12 draws. Pinto chipped in an assist and eight faceoff wins, while Linus Ullmark turned aside 27 of 29 shots for a .931 save percentage. In a one-goal road win, those are not background numbers; they are the framework of the result.

Ottawa also carried several team-level edges that fit the final score. The Senators blocked 21 shots to Toronto’s 10, outhit the Leafs 28-17, and won 56.9 per cent of the faceoffs. Those categories do not guarantee a win on their own, but in an otherwise even shooting game they helped Ottawa manage the thin margins better than Toronto did.

Our take: the Senators were cleaner in the details

This was not a runaway. Both clubs finished with 29 shots, both took five penalties for 10 minutes, and special teams were only slightly different, with Toronto going 1-for-4 and Ottawa 0-for-4. That is why the supporting details loom so large. The Senators won more draws, blocked far more attempts, and were a little safer with the puck, finishing with 15 giveaways to Toronto’s 19. In a 3-2 game, those small advantages stack up quickly.

Toronto still had enough from its better-known scorers to win. Matthews scored and put up six shots, Marchenko added the Leafs’ second goal, and Nylander, Rielly, Raddysh and Tavares all registered assists. Bobrovsky kept the game within reach with 26 saves. But the Leafs’ most productive stretch lasted only until Amadio’s equalizer, and they did not find the next answer after Halliday made it 3-2. If there is a practical lesson in the numbers, it is straightforward: with the shot total even, Toronto needed to be sharper everywhere else, while Ottawa showed how much a team can gain from winning draws, blocking pucks and getting a composed night from its goaltender.
