Capitals turn a 2-2 game into a 5-2 finish as Brodzinski and Chesley lead the way

The swing came at the period edges

Philadelphia actually wrote the first line of the night. Jack Studnicka scored at 2:42 of the opening period, with Cole Knuble and Jett Luchanko collecting the assists, and the Flyers had the early lead. Washington answered through Aliaksei Protas at 9:35, set up by Dylan Strome and Jacob MacDonald, and that reply mattered because it kept the game from tilting into a chase.

The first real turn came just before intermission. Ryan Leonard scored at 19:18 of the first period, assisted by Ryan Chesley and Justin Holl, to put Washington ahead 2-1. When a game spends most of its night within one goal, those late-period strikes carry extra weight, and Philadelphia spent the rest of the evening trying to erase one.

To the Flyers’ credit, they did erase it. Knuble scored at 8:06 of the second, with Oliver Bonk and Hunter McDonald assisting, and the game was level again at 2-2. But the tie did not survive the period. Strome scored at 18:17 of the second on assists from Jordan Kyrou and Chesley, restoring Washington’s lead. Washington did not need one player to monopolize the scoring because its playmaking spread the game open. Chesley was the clearest example. Brodzinski supplied the finishing punch. His goal at 1:57 of the third gave Washington breathing room, and his second at 9:45, assisted by Martin Fehervary and Theodor Niederbach, put the game out of reach at 5-2. Strome also had a strong line, contributing one goal and one assist, while Protas and Leonard rounded out a Capitals attack that kept producing answers whenever Philadelphia closed the gap.

The Flyers’ offense was narrower, but not without signs of life. Studnicka opened the scoring, and Knuble finished with a goal and an assist, meaning he had a hand in both Philadelphia goals. Bonk, Hunter McDonald, Luchanko and Knuble all appeared on the scoresheet, which at least gave Philadelphia a few productive combinations to notice, even if the team could not keep pace once Washington accelerated.

Our take: Washington won the moments, but both teams left something on the table

Our take: this was not a game Washington owned from start to finish so much as a game it managed better at the exact pressure points. The Capitals scored at 19:18 of the first, 18:17 of the second and 1:57 of the third. That is a useful habit — closing periods well and opening the next one even better — because it forces the other side to keep resetting. Washington’s scoring depth helped, but the timing of the goals was just as important as the total.

There is still an area for Washington to clean up. The Capitals took two penalties for seven minutes, and team stats show Philadelphia scored one power-play goal on its only opportunity. In a game that was tied 2-2 deep into the second period, that is not a trivial leak. If Washington wants this kind of multi-scorer night to feel more controlled, trimming the penalty damage is the obvious place to start.

For Philadelphia, the more pressing issue is the stretch after the equalizer. The Flyers got the game to 2-2 at 8:06 of the second, then gave up goals at 18:17 of the second, 1:57 of the third and 9:45 of the third. That is the entire story of the loss: not an absence of response, but an inability to hold the reset once it arrived. Discipline also fed the problem. Philadelphia was charged with four penalties for 11 minutes, while Washington converted one of its two power plays. The Flyers were competitive for long stretches on the scoreboard, but the details around the tie game were too loose, and Washington punished them every time.
