Phillies turn a tie game into a rout with seven-run eighth in 9-4 win over Braves

For seven innings at Truist Park, Philadelphia and Atlanta played the kind of game that hangs on one swing and one clean inning. The Phillies then supplied an entire rally at once, exploding for seven runs in the eighth and turning a 2-2 deadlock into a 9-4 win over the Braves.

Seven innings of give-and-take

Atlanta struck first and Philadelphia answered quickly, which is a fair description of the game before the eighth inning swallowed everything else. The Braves opened the scoring in the first when Drake Baldwin lifted a sacrifice fly to right that brought home Michael Harris II. The Phillies responded in the second with the most decisive swing of the early game, J.T. Realmuto driving a 405-foot homer to left-center to score Brandon Marsh and put Philadelphia ahead 2-1.

That edge held longer than the Phillies probably wanted and better than their starter’s line suggests. Andrew Painter worked five innings, allowed six hits and four walks, and still limited Atlanta to a single run. That matters: the Braves had traffic, but they could not turn that traffic into a crooked number. On the other side, Grant Holmes gave up five hits and two runs in four innings, and Ray Kerr kept Atlanta in the game beautifully with three scoreless innings and four strikeouts. When Matt Olson singled in Harris II in the seventh, tying it 2-2, the afternoon had settled into a late toss-up rather than anything resembling a blowout.

The inning that decided everything

Then came an eighth inning that read like a lineup card taking turns. Alec Bohm started the scoring burst with a double to center that brought home Bryce Harper and Trea Turner. Bryson Stott followed with a single to center to score Bohm. Realmuto added another single to center, Stott crossed, and the inning kept rolling. Kyle Schwarber punched a single to right that scored Bryan De La Cruz and Realmuto while moving Justin Crawford to third, and Turner capped the avalanche with a single to right that scored Crawford.

That sequence did more than add seven runs. It showed how complete Philadelphia’s offensive day was. The Phillies finished with 16 hits, five doubles, one homer, three walks and only five strikeouts. Realmuto led the way at 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs, but he had plenty of company: Stott went 3-for-5, Bohm drove in two, Schwarber knocked in two, Turner had two hits and an RBI, and Harper added two hits of his own. The mildly strange part of Philadelphia’s line is that it could have been even bigger. Despite all that traffic, the Phillies left 22 runners on base and grounded into two double plays. They did not waste the game, but they certainly delayed their punishment until one overwhelming inning.

Olson kept Atlanta alive, until he couldn’t do it alone

The final score should not erase the fact that Atlanta hit enough to make this uncomfortable. Olson was the Braves’ defining bat, going 3-for-5 with three RBI. His seventh-inning single pulled the game even, and his 400-foot homer to left-center in the ninth scored Ronald Acuña Jr. and trimmed the final margin to 9-4. Harris also went 3-for-5 and scored twice, Mauricio Dubón collected three hits, and Acuña added two more. A team that produces 12 hits and four walks usually gives itself a chance.

But the shape of those hits told the harder truth. Atlanta finished with only one extra-base hit, Olson’s home run. There were no doubles and no triples, so a lot of solid contact had to be stitched together one base at a time. Against Philadelphia’s staff, that proved too much to ask. Painter bent but held, Alex McFarlane supplied a clean inning with two strikeouts, and even after Jose Alvarado gave up the tying run in the seventh, the Phillies had enough margin to survive Olson’s late homer against Tanner Banks. It was not a spotless pitching day from Philadelphia, but it was sturdy enough once the offense detonated.

Our take: timing mattered more than totals

Our take: this result says as much about when the hits arrived as how many there were. Philadelphia clearly had the bigger offensive day, but the raw traffic was not as lopsided as a 9-4 score suggests. The Phillies had 16 hits and three walks; the Braves had 12 hits and four walks. Both clubs created repeated pressure. The difference was concentration. Atlanta scored in the first, seventh and ninth. Philadelphia saved nearly all of its separation for one devastating half-inning, turning a tie game into a seven-run lead before the Braves could answer.

For Atlanta, the cleanest area to improve is preserving the game once the bridge has been built. Kerr handed over a 2-2 contest after three scoreless innings, but Dylan Lee and Victor Mederos then combined to allow eight hits, seven runs and a walk while recording only two outs. For Philadelphia, this was an excellent win that still leaves useful nitpicks. A lineup that collects 16 hits should not need to wait until the eighth to breathe easy, and a pitching staff that allows 12 hits and four walks will not always be rescued by one huge inning. Still, if the question is whose performance carried more authority on the day, the answer is simple: the Phillies kept coming, and when the game finally cracked, they broke it all at once.
