Austin Riley’s eighth-inning homer carries Braves past Phillies at Truist Park

A game that kept changing hands

Philadelphia struck first on Alec Bohm’s RBI double in the opening inning, but the advantage did not hold for long. Mike Yastrzemski tied it for Atlanta with a run-scoring single in the second, Ozzie Albies pushed the Braves ahead with an RBI triple in the sixth, and the Phillies answered immediately in the seventh when J.T. Realmuto lined a two-run triple to right for a 3-2 lead.

The last turn belonged to Atlanta. Harris opened the path again, Albies was in the middle of it again, and Riley supplied the finish. Riley’s drive to right-centre in the eighth travelled 385 feet and flipped the score from 3-2 Philadelphia to 5-3 Atlanta, with Harris and Albies both crossing ahead of him.

That sequence was the difference in a game that offered chances to both clubs without much room for waste. Each team stranded 10 runners, so the decisive margin came from which side turned its extra-base hit into the bigger inning. Atlanta’s answer was Riley’s homer; Philadelphia never found a reply in the ninth.

Sale and Luzardo gave this game its shape

Jesús Luzardo gave the Phillies a steady start and looked set to put them in control. He worked five innings, allowed three hits and one run, walked one and struck out six. Outside of Yastrzemski’s RBI single in the second, Atlanta did not solve him, and Philadelphia left the first half of the night with the cleaner platform.

Chris Sale’s outing was different but still valuable for the Braves. The left-hander gave up three runs over 6.1 innings, yet his nine strikeouts kept Philadelphia from building a larger lead. Sale threw 95 pitches, 65 for strikes, and the Phillies managed only six hits and one walk all night against Atlanta pitching.

The bullpens then pushed the game toward its finish. Didier Fuentes recorded the final two outs after Sale’s exit, Dylan Lee covered a scoreless eighth, and Raisel Iglesias handled the ninth. On the other side, Alex McFarlane was charged with Atlanta’s sixth-inning run, and Jhoan Duran absorbed the late damage when Riley got hold of the eighth-inning fastball that changed the result.

Our take

Atlanta did not overwhelm Philadelphia on volume. The Braves finished with seven hits, one walk, nine strikeouts and those 10 stranded runners. Ronald Acuna Jr. and Matt Olson went a combined 0-for-7. Still, the Braves found just enough from the bats that mattered most: Harris reached safely in all three official at-bats, Albies tripled and scored twice, and Riley delivered the only home run of the game.

If there is a lesson for Atlanta, it is not about searching for more drama. It is about cashing in earlier. The Braves had traffic, they had three extra-base hits, and they still needed the eighth inning to finish a game that could have tilted sooner. When Harris and Albies are creating that much, a cleaner supporting inning or two would make the offence less dependent on one swing.

Philadelphia can point to strong work from Luzardo and a sharp seventh-inning response, but the broader line explains why the lead slipped away. The Phillies drew only one walk and struck out 10 times. Bohm and Realmuto drove in all three runs, while Bryce Harper went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and Trea Turner finished 0-for-3. Add four runs allowed over the final three innings, and a winnable night turned into a missed one.
