Three Braves homers and a six-pitcher effort carry Atlanta past Phillies 6-2

Three swings set the margin

Atlanta did not need a long string of hits to take control. Michael Harris II struck first with a three-run homer to right-centre in the opening inning, bringing home Ronald Acuña Jr. and Matt Olson and immediately handing the Braves the kind of lead that changed the shape of the night.

The second blow came in the fourth. Austin Riley reached and Ozzie Albies followed by driving a two-run shot to right-centre, stretching the lead to 5-0. When Olson added a solo homer to centre in the seventh, Atlanta had scored all six of its runs on three clean swings.

That was the defining contrast of the game. The Braves finished with the same six hits as the Phillies, but those six hits produced 15 total bases. Harris drove in three, Albies drove in two and Olson supplied the last run, while Dominic Smith quietly gave Atlanta its only multi-hit line at 2-for-3. Acuña added a hit and a walk, and Riley reached twice on walks even without a hit.

Atlanta’s mixed-and-matched pitching held up

The Braves also pieced the game together effectively on the mound. Ray Kerr opened with 3 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two. Grant Holmes followed for two innings and was charged with Philadelphia’s first run in the sixth, when Kyle Schwarber came home on Alec Bohm’s groundout to shortstop.

Philadelphia kept making Atlanta work. The Phillies forced 134 pitches from the Braves staff and put men on often enough to leave 14 on base, but the breakthrough never arrived. Robert Suarez recorded two outs without damage, Didier Fuentes supplied a scoreless inning, Dylan Dodd absorbed the eighth-inning run, and Chris Sale collected the final four outs with three strikeouts.

On the other side, Philadelphia never fully recovered from the first-inning deficit. Aaron Nola lasted 1 2/3 innings and allowed the Harris homer among his two hits against. Tim Mayza cleaned up the second, Zack Wheeler covered four innings but surrendered Albies’ two-run shot, Jonathan Bowlan gave up Olson’s seventh-inning homer, and Jhoan Duran finished with a scoreless eighth and two strikeouts.

Our take: same hit total, very different damage

This was a useful reminder that a box score can look balanced until one category overwhelms the rest. The teams matched each other in hits, and Philadelphia actually made Atlanta’s pitchers throw one fewer pitch than the Braves saw at the plate. The difference was the kind of contact each club produced. Atlanta hit three home runs. Philadelphia did not hit one and scored both of its runs on productive outs.

For the Phillies, that leaves a frustrating line. Kyle Schwarber reached three times and scored once, Bohm drove in a run, Trea Turner added a sacrifice fly, and the club still came away with only two runs despite six hits and two walks. With one double, one triple and 14 runners stranded, the offence created traffic without finding the decisive swing that would have changed the game’s pace.

For Atlanta, the result is encouraging precisely because it was not built on volume. The Braves drew five walks, got just enough length from six pitchers and turned three mistakes into six runs. There is still room to tighten the at-bats with men aboard after leaving eight on base themselves, but on this night the formula was clear and effective: a quick lead, a bullpen plan that held, and power that Philadelphia could not match.
