Phillies turn nine walks into seven runs, then let Justin Crawford’s eighth-inning triple finish a 7-2 win over the Mets

Patience, not power, set the tone

The shape of this game was unusual and unmistakable at the same time. Philadelphia scored seven runs on only seven hits and never hit a home run, which tells you the real story lived in the spaces between contact. The Phillies drew nine walks, saw 177 pitches, and kept creating innings that felt heavier than their hit total suggested.

That pressure arrived immediately. In the first inning, Luis Arraez brought home Kyle Schwarber with a sacrifice fly to left, and Alec Bohm followed with a single to center that scored Bryce Harper. Two innings later, the Phillies repeated the formula. Trea Turner doubled to left to score Schwarber, then Arraez singled to center to bring Turner home for a 4-0 lead.

Schwarber was a fitting symbol for the afternoon: officially 0-for-1, but on base four times via walks and across the plate twice. Turner scored three runs and added two walks of his own. Jonah Tong still punched out five hitters for New York, but his 4.2 innings required 95 pitches and included four walks. That is a difficult way to survive against a lineup willing to keep passing the at-bat along.

The Mets hit enough to matter, but not enough to control the game

To the Mets’ credit, they did not disappear. They put 10 hits on the board, more than Philadelphia managed, and they finally cracked Cristopher Sanchez in the sixth when Bo Bichette homered to left-center. In the seventh, Brett Baty singled to right to score Francisco Alvarez and cut the deficit to 4-2, with A.J. Ewing moving to second on the play.

That stretch is what makes the result a little more interesting than the final margin suggests. Sanchez worked 6.1 innings, allowed six hits and two runs, walked nobody and struck out six. He was not untouchable, but he was orderly. New York had to earn nearly everything the hard way because there were no free bases at all. The Mets finished with zero walks and eight strikeouts, and that combination made each rally depend on stacking multiple hits together.

There were contributors all through the New York order. Alvarez had two hits and scored once. Ewing went 2-for-2. Bichette supplied the loudest swing, while Juan Soto, Mark Vientos, Carson Benge, Luis Torrens and Baty each added a hit. But 10 hits became only two runs, and the 16 runners left on base explain why. Philadelphia’s bullpen bent after Sanchez exited, yet Alex McFarlane, Chase Shugart and Jose Alvarado combined for the final 2.2 innings without allowing a run.

The game stayed within reach until the eighth, and then Justin Crawford turned it. His triple to center scored Bryson Stott, Brandon Marsh and J.T. Realmuto, stretching a two-run game into a 7-2 cushion. That was the decisive blow: one extra-base hit, three runs, and the afternoon’s tension gone in a moment.

The inning also underlined where the Mets lost their grip. After scoreless work from Jack Weisenburger and Jefry Yan had kept the middle innings manageable, Kodai Senga was charged with three runs in one-third of an inning and issued three walks. Austin Warren cleaned up with 1.2 scoreless innings, but by then the damage had already been attached to the scoreboard.

Our take: this was one of those baseball results that punishes anyone who reads hits before anything else. The Mets outhit the Phillies 10-7 and still lost by five because Philadelphia owned the strike zone far more effectively. Nine walks gave the Phillies room to score without power; New York’s zero walks left it trying to solve every problem with another single. There is a lesson for both clubs inside that. The Mets would benefit from finding more ways onto base when the hits are already coming, because 10 hits should usually buy more than two runs. The Phillies, even in a convincing win, can be sharper with runners aboard; leaving 17 on base is a lot of missed breathing room. Still, the broader verdict is simple enough: Philadelphia played the cleaner offensive game, Sanchez gave them the stable start they needed, and Crawford supplied the hit that made the rest of the afternoon academic.
