Blue Jackets turn a sparse NHL game into a 4-0 statement against the Penguins

The game stayed small, and Columbus handled small better

This was not a track meet. Neither club reached even 13 shots, neither club received a power play, and the game lived almost entirely in the details that can look minor until they decide everything. Columbus was better in those details. The Blue Jackets won 60 percent of the faceoffs, delivered 23 hits to Pittsburgh’s 16, blocked 11 shots, and finished with eight fewer giveaways than the Penguins.

That combination matters in a low-event game because every lost puck is amplified. Pittsburgh turned it over 28 times and managed only 10 shots for the night. Columbus was hardly flawless with 20 giveaways of its own, but the Blue Jackets kept those mistakes from spoiling the evening by owning more draws and making Pittsburgh restart too many possessions.

Cam Talbot’s shutout fit the shape of the game. He did not need a 40-save showcase; he needed clean, composed work on the 10 shots that reached him, and he gave Columbus exactly that. On the other end, the Penguins simply never created enough volume to make the score feel unstable.

Werenski opened it, Voronkov connected the middle

The first confirmed breakthrough came at 11:48 of the opening period, when Zach Werenski scored on a wrist shot with Charlie Elick and Dmitri Voronkov picking up the assists. In a game this tight on attempts, the first goal carried extra weight. Columbus had the lead after one period, and Pittsburgh never found a reply.

The Blue Jackets did their real separating in the second. Valeri Nichushkin made it 2-0 at 14:42 on a backhand set up by Voronkov, giving the winger a second assist on the night. Then, with the period nearly gone, Danton Heinen struck at 19:45 on a wrist shot from Charlie Coyle. That late goal changed the temperature of the game. What had still been manageable for Pittsburgh at 2-0 became a three-goal climb heading to the third.

Columbus added one more in the final period to complete the 4-0 result, and even without a barrage of shots the Blue Jackets had already built the foundation for it. Voronkov’s two assists stood out as the clearest playmaking line on the night, while Werenski’s opener and Heinen’s late second-period finish gave the scoreline its structure.

Our take: a useful win for Columbus, a revealing night for Pittsburgh

For Columbus, this reads like the kind of result coaches can appreciate even without gaudy attack totals. The Blue Jackets did not just score; they controlled the rhythm of a game with almost no special-teams interruptions. Faceoff work from players such as Cole Sillinger and Charlie Coyle helped, and the heavier edge showed up in the hit count, with Luke Tuch’s six hits leading that category. Erik Gudbranson’s four blocked shots were another part of the same story: Columbus made Pittsburgh work for almost everything and gave away very little in front of Talbot.

Our take on Pittsburgh is simpler and harsher: 10 shots and 28 giveaways are too many empty possessions in the same game. The Penguins do not need a sweeping reinvention to improve from this one; they need cleaner puck management and more success at the dot, because the available numbers show both problems clearly. Columbus, meanwhile, should enjoy the shutout and the four-goal margin while still noticing two correctable issues of its own. The Blue Jackets also had 20 giveaways, including six by Corson Ceulemans, and they finished with only 12 shots despite scoring four times. On another night, that same shot total could ask much more of the goaltender. Still, as an NHL performance, this was organized, efficient and deservedly one-sided.
