Robertson scores twice as Penguins rout Flyers 7-0 behind Silovs shutout

Pittsburgh turned a rivalry game into a one-sided performance Wednesday night, beating Philadelphia 7-0 at Xfinity Mobile Arena with two goals from Nick Robertson, a three-point night from Filip Hallander and a 19-save shutout from Arturs Silovs.

Two goals set the tone before Pittsburgh blew it open

The Penguins established control in the first period and never gave Philadelphia a route back into the game. Robertson opened the scoring at 7:26 on a tip-in from Kris Letang and Sidney Crosby, then Ville Koivunen doubled the lead at 15:44 with a backhand finish created by Samuel Girard and Kaedan Korczak.

That 2-0 edge became a runaway in the middle frame. Evgeni Malkin scored on a slap shot at 5:03, Hendrix Lapierre struck 2:23 later, and Hallander added a wrist shot at 10:23. By the time the second period ended, Pittsburgh had stretched the margin to five and removed any suspense from the final 20 minutes.

Robertson added his second goal at 11:52 of the third period, and Egor Chinakhov capped the night with a tip-in at 16:37 off passes from Erik Karlsson and Rickard Rakell. The scoring sequence mattered as much as the final number: Pittsburgh did not rely on one late burst, but built the game in layers and kept adding before Philadelphia could answer.

Robertson finished, Hallander created, and the Penguins' depth kept coming

Robertson's two-goal night supplied the headline, but Pittsburgh's attack looked broader than a one-line outburst. Hallander finished with a goal and two assists, Lapierre had a goal and an assist, and both Girard and Korczak collected two assists from the blue line.

That spread is what made the scoreline so punishing for Philadelphia. Crosby contributed an assist on the opener, Malkin added a goal of his own, and Chinakhov and Koivunen each scored their first of the season. Pittsburgh finished with 13 assists on seven goals, a sign that the offence came through sustained support rather than isolated solo plays.

The defence joined in without losing control of its own end. Letang, Karlsson, Girard, Korczak and Declan Carlile all registered points, while Trevor van Riemsdyk led Pittsburgh with four blocked shots. When a team gets that kind of help from the back end, it becomes difficult for an opponent to contain every layer of the attack.

Silovs handled the rest

The Flyers did win the faceoff battle convincingly, taking 63.8 per cent of the draws, and they outhit Pittsburgh 27-21. None of that translated into sustained offence. Philadelphia managed only 19 shots, and Silovs turned aside every one of them for the shutout.

His workload was not overwhelming by volume, but the clean sheet still mattered because it completed the Penguins' control of the night. Pittsburgh blocked 11 shots, limited second chances well enough to keep the Flyers off the board, and finished with a perfect 1.000 save percentage. At the other end, Dan Vladar faced 38 shots and made 31 saves, a line that reflects how much of the evening was spent under pressure.

Our take: the puck management gap decided this one

A 7-0 result usually has more than one cause, and this one did. Pittsburgh generated twice as many shots as Philadelphia, 38-19, and the special-teams split widened the gap further. The Penguins scored twice on four power-play opportunities and added a short-handed goal, while the Flyers went 0-for-3 with the extra man.

Just as important, Philadelphia gave the puck away 21 times. That number does not explain every goal on its own, but it fits the broader pattern of a game in which the Flyers rarely turned their faceoff success into territorial control or meaningful pressure. Winning draws is useful only if the next play is clean enough to build on it.

For Pittsburgh, the encouraging part is how many contributors were involved and how firm the defensive numbers looked behind them. For Philadelphia, the first correction is simpler than any grand tactical rewrite: protect the puck better, generate more than 19 shots, and give the faceoff advantage a chance to matter. Until that happens, strong work on the dots will keep getting buried under the rest of the stat line.
