Tom Wilson’s three-point night carries Capitals past Penguins in 5-3 win

Washington built a three-goal cushion, survived Pittsburgh’s late push in the second period and then let Ryan Leonard finish the job. Tom Wilson had a goal and two assists, Pierre-Luc Dubois added a goal and an assist, and the Capitals beat the Penguins 5-3 at Capital One Arena.

An opening sprint, then Washington’s edge

The game began in a blur. Anthony Beauvillier opened the scoring just 23 seconds into the first period with a backhand finish off a Dylan Strome setup, and Pittsburgh answered 56 seconds later when Bryan Rust tied it with a snap shot from Ben Kindel and Samuel Girard. Before the opening two minutes had passed, the night had already turned into the kind of trade that tempts both teams into mistakes.

Washington handled the next stretch better. Wilson restored the Capitals’ lead at 11:51 of the first on a snap shot set up by Dubois, and that pairing kept resurfacing whenever the game needed a nudge. By the first intermission, Washington had a 2-1 lead and the early exchange had given way to a more controlled home performance.

The middle period nearly changed everything

The Capitals looked to have seized the game in the second. Dubois made it 3-1 at 4:42, finishing a play created by Wilson, and Alex Tuch pushed the margin to 4-1 at 13:14 with Wilson collecting another assist. At that point, Washington had five different scorers on the night within reach and a comfortable scoreboard.

Pittsburgh, though, did not let the game drift away quietly. Tommy Novak scored unassisted just 51 seconds after Tuch’s goal, and Nick Robertson’s tip-in at 18:01, from Kaedan Korczak and Blake Lizotte, pulled the Penguins within 4-3 before the second period ended. What had looked like a routine close suddenly became a live contest again.

That is why Leonard’s goal at 3:55 of the third period mattered so much. Set up by Jordan Kyrou and Cole Hutson, it restored Washington’s two-goal cushion before Pittsburgh could turn its late-second momentum into a full equalizer. From there, Logan Thompson finished a 27-save night, while Arturs Silovs stopped 22 of 27 for Pittsburgh.

Our take: Washington won the details, but not every minute

The Capitals did not win this game by overwhelming Pittsburgh on shot volume; the Penguins actually finished with a 30-27 edge there. Washington won it in the smaller categories that usually decide whether a lead feels secure. The Capitals controlled the faceoff circle at 59.6 per cent, delivered far more contact with a 22-7 advantage in hits, protected the puck better with only 10 giveaways to Pittsburgh’s 19, and finished ahead on special teams by going 1-for-4 on the power play while killing all three Penguins chances.

That does not mean Washington was flawless. A 4-1 lead became a 4-3 game in a span of 4:47, and that is the part of the night the Capitals would be right to revisit. Even in a win, allowing two quick replies after building separation forced Leonard’s third-period goal to become a necessity rather than a luxury. Cleaner finishing to the second period would have made the closing stages much calmer.

For Pittsburgh, the useful sign is that the offence gave the team a chance. Rust, Novak and Robertson all scored, and 30 shots is enough volume to stay in a road game. The problem was everything surrounding that push: too many giveaways, too little success on draws, and an empty power play. When a comeback effort requires nearly everything at five-on-five, the margin for error disappears quickly. Washington used that margin better, and that was the difference in a 5-3 game that stayed unsettled longer than the home side would have liked.
