Pirates’ sixth-inning surge turns Cubs’ brief lead into a 4-3 loss at Wrigley Field

The Cubs finally found their opening Saturday, but they could not protect it. Pittsburgh absorbed Chicago’s fifth-inning burst, answered with three runs in the sixth, and then handed the final 3 2/3 innings to a bullpen that allowed no hits in a 4-3 Pirates win at Wrigley Field.

A game that tilted twice

This was not a lopsided afternoon so much as a narrow game decided by which club did more with its better inning. Pittsburgh struck first when Bryan Reynolds singled home Konnor Griffin in the opening inning, but that early lead did not turn into a runaway. Matthew Boyd worked 5 1/3 innings for Chicago, Bubba Chandler matched that length for Pittsburgh, and for much of the day both teams were operating with traffic rather than comfort.

The difference is that the Pirates eventually turned their traffic into a full inning of damage. Pittsburgh finished with nine hits and five walks, while Chicago managed five hits and six walks. On the surface, that is the profile of a close game, and the 4-3 final reflected it. But the shape of those chances mattered: the Cubs stranded 13 runners and grounded into two double plays, while the Pirates, despite leaving 12 on base themselves, made their biggest cluster count in the sixth.

Amaya’s swing gave Chicago a window

For a stretch, it looked like Miguel Amaya might have authored the defining turn. His two-run homer in the fifth, a 389-foot drive to left that also scored Pedro Ramirez, flipped a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 Cubs lead. In a game where hard scoring details were scarce, one swing briefly gave Chicago the cleanest moment on the board.

Amaya’s line was one of the few clearly productive ones in the Cubs order. He went 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Michael Busch added two hits and later scored the Cubs’ final run. Those contributions kept Chicago close even though several regulars were kept quiet. Pete Crow-Armstrong and Seiya Suzuki were hitless, and the Cubs’ .167 team average for the day tells the larger story: there were enough baserunners to threaten, but not enough authoritative contact to keep the pressure building.

The Cubs did answer once more in the sixth, when Nico Hoerner grounded out to second and brought home Busch to cut the deficit to 4-3. That mattered because it proved Chicago still had an opening after losing the lead. It also underscored the frustration of the afternoon. A productive out is useful; on a day with six walks, it was not enough to offset all the empty plate appearances around it.

Pittsburgh’s sixth was the whole argument

The level game did not last long. Reynolds scored again in the sixth, this time on Nick Gonzales’ ground-rule double, and that sequence set the inning up for Brandon Lowe. Lowe followed with a single to center that scored both Rafael Flores Jr. and Gonzales, turning a tie game into a 4-2 Pirates lead. That was the decisive pocket of offense, and it came from players spread through the order rather than one star carrying the inning alone.

Reynolds finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, Jake Mangum reached three times with two hits and a walk, and Gonzales and Lowe delivered the run-producing swings that changed the scoreboard. Oneil Cruz drew three walks, another sign that Pittsburgh kept creating chances even without a home run. The Pirates did not slug their way through this game; they accumulated it. Two doubles, nine hits, five walks and 165 pitches seen is a patient, persistent offensive line, even if it also left room for more.

Our take: this result says something flattering about Pittsburgh’s offense without overstating it. The Pirates were not overwhelmingly efficient — 12 runners left on base is too many for that — but they were the side that kept forcing decisions. Chicago pitchers had to navigate 39 plate appearances and 165 pitches, and eventually the sixth inning broke open. In a one-run game, that kind of sustained workload can be just as important as a single headline swing.

The bullpen finished what the lineup started

Once Chandler exited after 5 1/3 innings, Pittsburgh’s relievers gave Chicago almost nothing to hit. Carmen Mlodzinski covered 1 2/3 scoreless innings, Luke Weaver handled the eighth, and Mason Montgomery worked the ninth. Combined, that trio threw 3 2/3 hitless innings. They did issue two walks, so this was not absolute command, but Chicago never found the tying knock against them.

That finish is the clearest practical difference between the clubs. Pittsburgh’s pitchers walked six and struck out only four, which is hardly a blueprint to admire uncritically. But the damage stopped after the sixth. Chicago’s staff, by contrast, allowed nine hits and five walks and needed 165 pitches to get through the game. Boyd absorbed the hardest part of it, giving up seven hits and four runs in 5 1/3 innings, and the Pirates’ sixth-inning rally defined his line.

Our take: the Cubs can reasonably look at this as a missed offensive opportunity more than a complete failure on the mound. Six walks and only five hits can still win if the contact arrives in the right places, but 13 runners left on base and two double plays point to a lineup that never cashed in often enough. For Pittsburgh, the improvement area is just as visible: six walks allowed kept Chicago within reach all afternoon. The Pirates won because their timely hitting and late relief covered that flaw. Against a sharper offense, they would want fewer free passes.
