Spencer Torkelson’s big night built the cushion as Tigers held off Pirates’ five-run eighth

The Tigers built it inning by inning

Pittsburgh struck first in the second, and for a moment it looked like the visitors might control the evening. Ryan O'Hearn singled home Oneil Cruz, then Spencer Horwitz doubled to right to bring in O'Hearn for a 2-0 lead. Against a lineup that would eventually see 166 pitches and draw seven walks, that edge did not last long.

Detroit answered immediately in the bottom half. Spencer Torkelson tripled to right and scored Eduardo Valencia and Brett Callahan to tie the game, a swing that changed the tone and started a night in which Torkelson kept showing up at the center of every important Tigers sequence. He finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and the extra-base damage mattered as much as the total.

The decisive early burst came an inning later. Dillon Dingler singled to left to score Kevin McGonigle and Valencia, pushing Detroit in front 4-2. Then came the strangest scoring play of the game: Torkelson struck out, but a wild pitch by Bubba Chandler let him reach first while Greene and Dingler both scored. In one sequence, the Tigers turned pressure into two more runs and a 6-2 lead, while Chandler's line swelled to six runs in 2.2 innings on 77 pitches and four walks.

Torkelson, Valencia and the extra traffic

Detroit kept adding even without a constant stream of clean RBI swings. In the sixth, Valencia crossed on a fielder's choice ball that became a fielding error by shortstop Konnor Griffin, making it 7-2. In the seventh, Torkelson drove a 387-foot homer to left-center for the Tigers' eighth run. That was the last score Detroit would need, though not the last one it would want.

Valencia's line explains a lot about why the Tigers spent so much of the night on offense. He went 2-for-2, walked three times and scored three runs. Dingler added two RBIs, Riley Greene reached base three times with a hit and two walks, and Detroit piled up 10 hits overall. The Tigers also stranded 21 runners, which is the odd stat line that turns this from a clean offensive showcase into something a little messier. They had enough chances to make the late innings irrelevant, but they never fully buried Pittsburgh.

The five-run jolt that changed the ending

For most of the game, Detroit's pitching looked in command. Jackson Jobe worked 5.1 innings, allowed two runs and struck out eight. Drew Sommers followed with 0.2 scoreless innings and two more strikeouts. As a staff, the Tigers finished with 14 strikeouts, and through the middle innings that swing-and-miss edge kept Pittsburgh from building on its fast start.

Then the eighth inning arrived and nearly rewrote everything. Nick Gonzales singled home Bryan Reynolds to make it 8-3. O'Hearn followed with another RBI single, scoring Cruz. A few batters later, Rafael Flores Jr. crushed a three-run homer to center, bringing home Gonzales and O'Hearn and suddenly shrinking Detroit's six-run cushion to 8-7. Andrew Sears was charged with all five runs in 1.2 innings, turning what had been a steady pitching night into a scramble.

Tyler Holton recorded one out, and Kenley Jansen handled the ninth with two strikeouts in a scoreless inning. Detroit got the win, but only after Pittsburgh finally found the loud inning it had been missing all night. Flores finished with three RBIs on one swing, O'Hearn drove in two and scored twice, and the Pirates did what good lineups sometimes do too late: they made every mistake in the margin count.

Our take: a deserved win, and a warning inside it

Detroit was the better side for most of the game and earned the result with constant traffic on the bases. Ten hits, seven walks and several innings of pressure usually produce a comfortable finish. The Tigers' problem was that eight runs came with so many missed chances that the door never really shut. When a team leaves 21 men on base, it is fair to say the offense succeeded and still left room for sharper finishing.

For Pittsburgh, the tempting story is the comeback that almost happened. The more useful one is the deficit that made the comeback necessary. Chandler's 2.2 innings, four walks and wild-pitch damage put the Pirates in a 6-2 hole, and the offense struck out 14 times overall. The rally in the eighth showed real punch, but seven hits and nine runners left on base tell the fuller story. If the Pirates want more from games like this, the evidence points to two simpler needs: cleaner early pitching and fewer empty at-bats before the late urgency arrives.

That is what made this 8-7 final so revealing. Detroit showed enough offense to control the matchup and enough late unease to know control is not the same as closure. Pittsburgh showed enough power to frighten the Tigers and too many earlier lapses to escape the bill.
