Machado’s homer, Padres bullpen and one Yamamoto error shape 5-1 win over Dodgers

One swing changed the temperature

For three innings, the game sat still. Then Manny Machado gave it shape. His 409-foot homer to center in the fourth scored Dustin Harris and handed San Diego a 2-0 lead, the first firm blow in a night otherwise crowded with baserunners and missed chances. But a solo mistake to Machado and a throwing error in a tight game are exactly the kind of details that bend a final score.

Traffic without payoff

The strangest part of the Dodgers’ night is how much offense they appeared to have until the only number that truly counts showed up. Los Angeles collected 10 hits and drew five walks. Hernández went 3-for-4, Andy Pages finished 3-for-4, Kyle Tucker added two hits, and Will Smith reached four times with a single and three walks. Shohei Ohtani also reached twice. Yet the Dodgers scored once, did not homer, managed only one extra-base hit, and stranded 22 baserunners.

That left the door open for a Padres pitching staff that spent most of the evening working around danger. Robbie Ray lasted only 3 1/3 innings and needed 84 pitches to do it, surrendering seven hits and a run. From there, San Diego’s bullpen was the game’s quiet strength. David Morgan, Yuki Matsui, Bradgley Rodriguez, Adrian Morejon and Mason Miller covered the final 5 2/3 innings without allowing a run. Together they gave up only three hits, walked four and struck out six. Miller’s clean ninth, punctuated by two strikeouts, made the finish look simpler than the middle innings felt.

San Diego’s pressure points

San Diego did not play a flawless offensive game either, and that is part of what makes the result interesting. The Padres had eight hits, two walks, two hit batters and three stolen bases, but they also left 18 on base. This was not an avalanche; it was pressure applied in the right spots. Tatis went 3-for-5 and kept finding his way into the action. Machado had only one hit, but it was the biggest swing of the night, and he finished with three RBIs. Freddy Fermin added the final run in the ninth with a single to left that scored Samad Taylor.

That contrast tells the whole story. The Dodgers posted the better game batting average and on-base percentage, but San Diego created the heavier moments. One team stacked plate appearances; the other stacked damage. Baseball does not always reward the club that fills more lines on the scoresheet, and this was one of those nights. The Padres got a homer, a sacrifice fly, an error-assisted run and a late insurance single. The Dodgers got one sacrifice fly and a long list of unfinished innings.

Our take: cleaner damage beats louder traffic

Our take: San Diego will gladly keep the win, but there is still room to be sharper. Leaving 18 on base and needing 132 pitches to produce five runs suggest an offense that could have put the game away earlier. Even so, there was a useful edge to the Padres’ night. They ran well enough to steal three bases, Tatis kept traffic moving, Machado supplied the one authoritative swing, and the bullpen protected every inch of the lead after the fourth inning.

Our take: the Dodgers do not need a dramatic rethink so much as a more forceful finish to innings. Ten hits and five walks should feel bigger than one run, especially when four different hitters made repeated contributions. The absence of extra-base thump — one double, no home runs — kept every rally dependent on stringing together singles and free passes. And the fifth-inning throwing error hurt because Yamamoto had otherwise kept the game manageable. In a 5-1 loss, Los Angeles was not short on opportunity. It was short on conversion.
