Padres make six hits count and waste a brilliant Dodgers top three in 4-2 win at Dodger Stadium

A low-scoring game built on missed connections

This matchup stayed scoreless through five innings because both starting pitchers gave their clubs room to breathe and almost nobody used it. Tyler Glasnow struck out 11 in 6 1/3 innings for Los Angeles, allowing only three hits and two walks. Nick Pivetta answered with 4 2/3 scoreless innings for San Diego, striking out seven while giving up four hits and one walk. By the time the game loosened, both lineups had already spent much of the night swinging through chances.

The first break came in the sixth, and it was modest on paper but meaningful in context. Dustin Harris lifted a sacrifice fly to center that brought Ethan Salas home for a 1-0 Padres lead. In a game with no home runs and little sustained traffic, even a single run changed the shape of the night. San Diego did not need a barrage; it needed one inning in which contact arrived before another strikeout did.

Our take: this was not a night when raw stuff decided everything by itself. The Dodgers' staff piled up 16 strikeouts and still lost, which usually means the sequencing went wrong somewhere else. San Diego's pitchers were excellent too, but the clearest early lesson belonged to the Padres' offense: it accepted that the game would be narrow and kept moving runners until one productive out finally landed.

San Diego won this game in the seventh by stacking three ordinary-looking plays into one damaging inning. Austin Hays reached on an infield single that scored Jackson Merrill and moved Xander Bogaerts to second. Salas followed with a single to center that scored Bogaerts and sent Sung-Mun Song to second. Then Fernando Tatis Jr. singled to right, scoring Song and pushing Salas to third. Suddenly a tense 1-0 game was 4-0.

That stretch says a lot about how the Padres survived a night in which they managed only six hits and struck out 16 times. Tatis finished 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Salas went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Hays had one at-bat and made it count with a run-producing infield hit. Bogaerts scored despite going hitless because he reached with a walk, and Song also crossed without recording a hit. San Diego's offense was not broad-based, but it was precise when the inning finally opened.

Our take: the Padres should enjoy the efficiency and still recognize the warning label attached to it. They scored four runs on six hits, stole two bases and did not waste the only inning that truly belonged to them. But 16 strikeouts, a .188 team average and eight runners left on base are not the profile of an attack that can coast. On this night, the timely burst was enough. On many others, it will need a little more traffic before the breakthrough.

The Dodgers had the hits, not the finish

Los Angeles made a late push, but it mostly served to underline the problem that had already shaped the game. Mookie Betts scored in the eighth on a balk, trimming the deficit to 4-1. In the ninth, Shohei Ohtani doubled to center to bring home Tommy Edman and make it 4-2. Those were real openings, yet the larger story remained the same one that haunted the Dodgers from the start: too many men on base, too few of them coming home.

The individual lines are striking. Betts went 3-for-3 with a walk and scored both Dodgers runs. Freddie Freeman added a 2-for-4 night. Ohtani finished 2-for-5 with the club's only RBI. That means the top three hitters collected all seven Los Angeles hits. Everyone else in the Dodgers lineup went a combined 0-for-22. Add in 15 runners left on base, and the final margin starts to make complete sense.

Our take: this is the kind of loss that can irritate a team more than a lopsided one, because so much of the foundation looked good. Los Angeles pitching allowed only six hits, walked two and struck out 16. The defense did not commit an error. But baseball is ruthless about concentration of production. When all seven hits come from the first three spots and the rest of the order is silent, pressure builds on every big swing and every stranded runner feels heavier. The Dodgers do not need to reinvent anything from this game; they need more lineup length on nights when Betts, Freeman and Ohtani already do enough to give them a chance.
