Chourio’s two-run ninth turns sparse offence into a Brewers comeback over Padres

France gave San Diego the early edge

San Diego did not produce much volume at the plate, but Ty France made two of the Padres’ five hits matter. He opened the scoring in the first inning with a single to centre that brought Manny Machado home, and that slim advantage fit the way Michael King was throwing. King worked five innings, allowed three hits and one run, and struck out six without a walk, giving the Padres exactly the sort of start that should be enough in a low-event game.

The lead grew to 2-0 in the fifth when Dustin Harris grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Luis Campusano, with Harris reaching second on Cooper Pratt’s throwing error. Milwaukee answered in the bottom half, cutting the gap to one on Sal Frelick’s single to left that scored Christian Yelich. That exchange captured the afternoon well: neither side was stringing together much clean offence, and defensive mistakes kept changing the texture of innings. Brewers starter Logan Henderson lasted five innings, gave up only two hits, and was charged with just one earned run despite three errors behind him.

France struck again in the seventh, singling to right to score Fernando Tatis Jr. for a 3-1 Padres lead, though Machado was thrown out trying for third on the same play. France finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, accounting for the Padres’ clearest offensive work on a day when the rest of the lineup managed only three hits and no extra-base damage.

Milwaukee stayed close through the untidy innings

The Brewers were hardly explosive themselves. They also finished with five hits and struck out eight times, but they kept finding a way to trim the deficit before the game got away. Their second run came in the seventh, when Garrett Mitchell scored and both David Hamilton and Pratt moved up on Jake Cronenworth’s throwing error. It was not a glamorous rally, yet it pulled Milwaukee within 3-2 and kept real pressure on the final two innings.

Just as important, Milwaukee’s bullpen gave the comeback room to happen. JoJo Romero, Abner Uribe, Aaron Ashby and Trevor Megill covered the final four innings, allowing three hits and one run, with that run unearned. Romero handled two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning, Uribe worked through the Padres’ seventh-inning push without surrendering an earned run, and Megill closed the top of the ninth with a clean frame to send the Brewers to their last turn still within one.

San Diego’s relief picture went the other way late. Yuki Matsui and Bradgley Rodriguez kept the game steady through the middle innings, but Mason Miller’s final 1.2 innings became the opening Milwaukee needed. Miller allowed two runs on one hit and three walks while striking out two. In a matchup where base hits were scarce, free passes were costly currency.

Our take: the cleaner late execution won it

The deciding swing arrived only after Milwaukee created one more opening than San Diego could close. Frelick reached base three times, going 1-for-2 with two walks, and Yelich scored twice. With both men aboard in the ninth, Chourio lined a single to centre and turned a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 finish in one stroke. Chourio’s box score was modest overall at 1-for-4, but in a game this compressed, one authoritative plate appearance was enough to define it.

This result looked less like an offensive statement than a lesson in late execution. Both clubs hit .156. Both finished with five hits. Both made errors. The difference was that Milwaukee limited San Diego to one earned run all day and kept the Padres from adding on after the seventh, while San Diego could not protect a lead once command started to loosen. The Padres can still point to King’s five sharp innings and France’s productive afternoon, but the seventh-inning throwing error and Miller’s three walks left too little margin. For Milwaukee, the comeback was proof that even on a quiet day at the plate, persistence and a single decisive hit can be enough.
