Base traffic against big swings

The contrast showed up early. San Francisco struck first on Rafael Devers’ two-run homer in the opening inning, with Drew Gilbert aboard, and for a moment it looked like the Giants might spend the night scoring in chunks. San Diego answered by making the game longer and messier for the home pitching staff. Dustin Harris tied it in the second with a single to left that brought home Xander Bogaerts and Austin Hays, and every inning after that seemed to include another Padres runner forcing a decision.

San Francisco briefly reclaimed the edge when Shay Whitcomb homered in the second, but the Giants never turned that into sustained control. Jackson Merrill’s solo shot in the third pulled the Padres even again, Harris added a sacrifice fly in the fourth, Jake Cronenworth pushed across Hays with a bunt single in the fifth, and Fernando Tatis Jr. extended the lead with a solo homer in the sixth. By the time Bogaerts came home on Whitcomb’s fielding error in the seventh, San Diego had built a 7-3 cushion through accumulation more than one knockout blow.

That was the defining shape of the game. The Padres finished with 13 hits, six walks and three stolen bases, while striking out only four times in 47 plate appearances. Bogaerts set the pace with a 4-for-5 line and two runs scored, Tatis reached five times between two hits and three walks, and Hays crossed the plate twice. Even Manny Machado’s hitless night did not slow the offense, because enough of the lineup kept handing the next hitter another baserunner to work with.

King steadies it, then the eighth goes sideways

Michael King gave San Diego the kind of start that can get overlooked in a game with this much late noise. After surrendering Devers’ first-inning homer and Whitcomb’s solo shot in the second, he settled into seven innings of five-hit, three-run work without issuing a walk. That detail mattered. The Giants did damage when they cleared the fence, but King kept them from stacking free passes on top of the power, and that is a large part of why San Diego could survive giving up four home runs overall.

The game changed tone in a hurry in the eighth. Bradgley Rodriguez entered and did not record an out, allowing three hits and three earned runs. Drew Cavanaugh opened the inning’s scoring with a solo homer to right, and Gilbert followed later with a two-run shot that scored Christian Koss and cut the margin to 7-6. In a few pitches, a comfortable-looking night became a bullpen emergency.

Adrian Morejon restored order with a scoreless inning and two strikeouts, and Mason Miller handled the ninth with two more strikeouts for the save. That finish does not erase the eighth, but it does explain why the Padres escaped. San Diego needed calm from its final two relievers because the bridge to them disappeared almost instantly.

Our take: the Padres earned the result, and both clubs have clear homework

Our take: San Diego deserved this one because it spent far more of the evening creating pressure. The Giants hit four home runs, which is usually a formula for winning, but they also drew no walks and managed only eight hits total. All six runs came on homers. That makes for a dangerous offense in bursts, yet it also means too many innings passed without any additional strain on Padres pitching. San Diego, by contrast, kept returning to the same winning habits: contact, baserunners and another chance for the next hitter.

For the Padres, the improvement point is not hard to find even in victory. A team that produces 13 hits, six walks and three steals probably should not need a perfect final six outs to hold on by one run. The late relief wobble was the obvious problem, but there is a second one hiding underneath it: San Diego left 25 runners on base across the game. That does not diminish the quality of the lineup’s work, yet it does suggest there was room to turn all that traffic into a margin sturdy enough to absorb an ugly inning.

For the Giants, the lesson is even sharper. Power kept them alive; patience never arrived. In 34 plate appearances, San Francisco drew zero walks and struck out eight times. Devers, Whitcomb, Cavanaugh and Gilbert supplied every run with four swings, but the rest of the offensive profile left almost no backup plan. If the Giants are looking for a better version of this game, it starts with finding more ways to put runners on before the next homer rather than asking each blast to do all the lifting.

There is also a run-prevention problem worth noting. Giants pitchers threw 154 pitches, allowed 13 hits and six walks, and Cesar Perdomo was charged with five runs in 4.2 innings. Add Whitcomb’s seventh-inning error, which let Bogaerts score, and San Francisco gave away too many extra openings to a lineup that was already seeing the ball well. The comeback nearly covered all of that. It did not quite cover enough.

That is why this result feels fair even if the final inning line made it nervous. The Giants had the louder swings, but the Padres had the fuller game. Over nine innings, San Diego kept stacking small advantages until it had just enough left when the homers started flying again.
