Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado give Padres enough to hold off Giants, 6-4

A game with nine hits on each side usually stays unsettled until the end, and this one did. The difference at Oracle Park was that San Diego’s loudest swings came early and with runners on, giving the Padres a cushion they needed in a 6-4 win over the San Francisco Giants.

San Diego’s fast damage set the tone

The Padres did not need a long buildup to take control. Jackson Merrill’s first-inning double to left brought home Fernando Tatis Jr. and Dustin Harris for a 2-0 lead, and San Diego came right back in the second. Tatis singled to center to score Samad Taylor, then Manny Machado drove a 392-foot homer to left that also scored Tatis. Before the Giants had finished their second turn at bat, San Diego had built a 5-0 advantage.

That burst carried the fingerprints of the hitters most capable of changing a game in one swing or one clean at-bat. Tatis finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, reaching base all night and appearing in four of the Padres’ six scoring plays as either scorer or run producer. Machado added the two-run homer, a walk and two RBIs of his own, while Merrill’s early double remained one of the night’s pivotal blows. San Diego managed only one walk as a team, but it still turned nine hits into 15 total bases and three stolen bases, which is a strong night’s work when the contact arrives in the right places.

San Francisco did answer in the second when Andrew Knizner hit a 409-foot homer to left, scoring Shay Whitcomb and cutting the deficit to 5-2. The Giants were never completely absent from the game. But the Padres immediately restored space in the fourth when Tatis singled to center again, this time bringing home Ethan Salas for a 6-2 score. That extra run mattered because it kept Logan Webb’s difficult outing from becoming merely manageable. Webb struck out seven and walked only one, yet San Diego still tagged him for eight hits and six runs across five innings.

The Giants kept creating chances, but the finish never arrived

If the scoreboard tells one story, the traffic on the bases tells another. The Giants matched San Diego with nine hits, drew four walks, stole three bases and made the Padres throw 163 pitches. They also kept trimming the lead. Bryce Eldridge’s fifth-inning groundout brought home Christian Koss, and in the sixth Koss singled to center to score Scott Bandura. At 6-4, San Francisco had done enough to make the final third of the game relevant.

What the Giants could not do was turn all that traffic into a true collapse for the Padres. Nick Pivetta gave San Diego four innings, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks, and the middle of the Padres’ pitching line wobbled just enough to let San Francisco back in. After that, however, the relief work settled the night. David Morgan, Wandy Peralta, Randy Vasquez and Yuki Matsui combined for four scoreless innings, allowing only two hits while striking out four. Matsui picked up the save, and the most important number in that stretch was simply zero.

The Giants’ own bullpen deserved better support. Once Webb exited, Matt Wilkinson covered three scoreless innings and Trent Harris finished with a clean ninth on five pitches, all strikes. That gave San Francisco a real opening to come back, because the game stopped moving after the sixth. The issue was not whether the Giants had enough innings left; it was whether they could cash in the ones they had already built, and the answer was no.

Our take: equal hits, unequal impact

This is one of those results that looks ordinary until the comparison becomes unavoidable. Same number of hits, different outcome, and the reason sits in the shape of the offense. San Diego’s best swings came with runners aboard: Merrill’s two-run double, Machado’s two-run homer, and Tatis driving in runs in both the second and fourth. The Padres also stole three bases and finished with three extra-base hits to San Francisco’s one. Our take: that is a practical blueprint for winning a close MLB game even when the on-base volume is not overwhelming. The warning sign for San Diego is that 13 runners were left on base and 10 batters struck out, so there was still sloppiness inside a productive night.

For the Giants, the frustrating part is that the ingredients of a bigger scoring night were present. Four walks, nine hits, three stolen bases and 40 plate appearances should usually produce more than four runs. Instead, San Francisco was charged with 22 runners left on base and got just one extra-base hit, Knizner’s homer. Our take: that combination explains the game more clearly than the final hit totals do. The Giants did enough to keep applying pressure, but not enough to break the game open in any single inning after falling behind 5-0.

There is also a clean lesson for both pitching staffs. San Francisco can take something from the way Wilkinson and Trent Harris stabilized the game after Webb’s five innings, because four scoreless frames kept the lineup within reach. The Padres, meanwhile, will like the way the bullpen closed the door after the lead narrowed, but not the extra mess around it. Two errors, four walks allowed and repeated Giants baserunners left this closer than it might have needed to be. In the end, though, San Diego earned the cleaner verdict: its stars created the separation, and its relievers protected it.
