The fifth inning was small, sharp and decisive
For four innings, this San Francisco Giants-St. Louis Cardinals matchup looked like the kind of game that could be tipped by one loose stretch rather than one loud swing. Neither club hit a home run, neither committed an error, and both pitching staffs kept turning traffic into escape routes. Then St. Louis finally stitched together the only inning that truly held.
Thomas Saggese started the damage by coming around on Alec Burleson’s single to right, with Ivan Herrera moving to third. A batter later, Leo Bernal added the second and final Cardinals run with another single to right, scoring Herrera and pushing Jordan Walker to second while Burleson advanced to third. That sequence mattered because it was the game’s lone moment when either lineup converted repeated pressure into multiple runs.
It also framed the night for San Francisco starter Landen Roupp, who was charged with both runs over 4.1 innings. The Giants’ staff was otherwise sturdy enough to keep the score there, with Joel Kuhnel, Trent Harris and Carson Seymour combining for 3.2 scoreless innings after the fifth. In a 2-1 game, that gave San Francisco every chance to recover. The Giants just never found the second hit that would change the result.
Mathews gave St. Louis length, and the bullpen supplied the finish
St. Louis got exactly the kind of start a one-run game requires. Quinn Mathews worked 6.2 innings, allowed four hits and one run, walked two and struck out eight on 99 pitches. More than the raw line, the shape of it mattered: he limited San Francisco to scattered production for most of the night and forced the Giants to keep chasing the game with strikeouts mixed into their few openings.
The Giants did break through in the sixth. Grant McCray scored on Jonah Cox’s single to center, trimming the deficit to 2-1 and giving San Francisco a clear route back into the game. Cox’s RBI accounted for the Giants’ only run, and it arrived in the middle innings when a game like this usually starts asking harder questions of a starter. Mathews answered enough of them to hand the final outs to the bullpen with the lead intact.
From there, the Cardinals finished the job by missing bats. Justin Bruihl recorded the final out of the seventh, Ryne Stanek struck out two in the eighth, and Riley O’Brien struck out two more in the ninth. That meant four strikeouts across the last 2.1 innings, a blunt way to protect a one-run lead when putting extra runners on base would have opened the door. St. Louis pitchers piled up 12 strikeouts overall and held the Giants to six hits and a .194 team average.
Our take: both teams left a better offensive night unused
Our take: the Cardinals deserved this result, but they did not overwhelm San Francisco so much as manage the key inning better and pitch their way through the rest. St. Louis finished with eight hits and four walks, yet still left 16 runners on base and hit into two double plays. That is enough evidence to say the offense created more than the final score showed, but also enough to say there is room to be cleaner when innings start to build.
For the Giants, the frustration is even clearer in the box. They drew four walks, collected six hits, saw 151 pitches and still stranded 15 runners while striking out 12 times. In a one-run loss, that combination usually points to an offense that gave itself opportunities but too often let at-bats end without a ball forcing action. With only one extra-base hit, San Francisco did not create much separation once runners were aboard, so a reasonable improvement would be turning more of those traffic-heavy innings into contact-driven pressure rather than letting strikeouts thin them out.
St. Louis can make a similar, if less urgent, note on its side. The Cardinals won because Burleson and Bernal cashed in the fifth and because the pitching staff closed hard, not because the lineup squeezed every advantage from the night. In that sense, this was an efficient win without being a complete one. Against the Giants on Monday, efficient was enough.
