Traffic without separation
The shape of this game was strange from the start. San Francisco piled up baserunners all afternoon — 13 hits, four walks and 43 plate appearances — but spent most of the day pretending that was a modest amount of offense. St. Louis helped keep the score small by turning six double plays, and Matthew Liberatore did his part by working six innings while allowing just one earned run. So a game in which the Giants consistently reached base still sat at 1-0 through six, the only run coming in the third when Brett Harris grounded into a double play and Jonah Cox crossed the plate.
That narrow margin held because Anthony Molina gave the Giants exactly the kind of start that can disappear from memory in a wild finish. He worked 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowed only two hits and one walk, and struck out six. The Cardinals saw plenty of pitches over the full 10 innings and eventually drew seven walks, but early on they had almost nothing solid to show for it. St. Louis finished with five hits, just one for extra bases, and spent much of the game trying to build offense without the contact to make it hold.
San Francisco finally created a little room in the seventh, and Cox was at the center of it. His single to right scored Andrew Knizner, and Jordan Walker’s throwing error let Christian Koss score as well, with Cox moving to second. It was a useful snapshot of the Giants’ best hitters on the day: Cox finished 3-for-4 with a walk, a run and an RBI, while Knizner also went 3-for-4 and kept showing up in the innings that mattered. At 3-0, the Giants looked as if they had finally turned volume into control.
The seventh turned untidy
Instead, the game unraveled into the kind of contest neither club will want to frame as a model. In the bottom of the seventh, St. Louis got on the board when Walker scored on Koss’s throwing error as Nathan Church reached safely. Then Thomas Saggese came home on a wild pitch. In a matter of moments, San Francisco’s cleaner work on the mound had been complicated by its rougher work in the field, and a three-run cushion was down to 3-2.
The Giants answered in the eighth, again through contact rather than thunder. Knizner singled to left to bring home Shay Whitcomb for a 4-2 lead. Whitcomb had two hits of his own, and that run felt important because San Francisco’s offense had been productive without ever quite looking ruthless. The Giants finished with only two extra-base hits all game, and before extra innings they had managed just one run in the first six innings despite steady traffic.
St. Louis used patience to stay alive and finally pulled even in the ninth. Jose Fermín’s sacrifice fly scored Nolan Gorman, and Leo Bernal followed with a single to right that brought home Saggese and tied the game 4-4. The Cardinals did that with an offense that hit .143 as a team, which tells its own story. They did not overwhelm San Francisco with hard contact; they kept extending innings, accepted the walks that were there, and benefited when the Giants failed to finish plays cleanly.
A tie that said plenty
Our take: the Giants can enjoy the resilience and still admit the performance came with too much clutter. A club that records 13 hits and four walks should not need the 10th inning to escape, and San Francisco’s 22 runners left on base explain why it did. So do the two caught stealings and the two double plays it hit into. The encouraging part is that the lineup kept creating chances. The warning is that it kept burning them.
Our take on St. Louis is slightly different. The Cardinals found a way to make the game uncomfortable, and there is value in that, but seven walks should usually produce more than five hits and one double. When a team also strikes out 10 times, the missing piece is not effort or patience; it is impact contact. The comeback was real, but it depended heavily on free bases, two sacrifice flies and Giants mistakes. That is a path to pressure, not always a path to control.
Gilbert’s swing settled the argument
After all the scattered scoring, the decisive play was refreshingly simple. Gilbert came up for his lone at-bat in the 10th and drove a 415-foot homer to center, scoring Grant McCray and putting San Francisco back in front 6-4. It was the Giants’ only home run of the day and the swing that finally matched their overall offensive edge. For an afternoon built on singles, baserunners and missed opportunities, that one clean blow was the clearest statement either side made.
The Cardinals still pushed one last time in the bottom half when Saggese lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Alec Burleson and trimming the margin to 6-5 with Victor Scott II moving to third. Even in the final inning, San Francisco could not make the finish feel easy. That, really, was the game in miniature: the Giants were the better hitting team, but not the tidier one. They won because their offense kept generating chances until one decisive swing finally held up. Against a St. Louis club that managed only five hits, that was enough — and just enough is the most honest way to describe it.
