Stars spread out the scoring and blank Sharks 5-0 behind Oettinger shutout

Dallas needed only one late first-period breakthrough to turn a tight game into a one-sided finish Tuesday night, beating the San Jose Sharks 5-0 at American Airlines Center behind five different goal scorers and a 13-save shutout from Jake Oettinger.

Heiskanen’s late opener changed the night

For nearly the entire first period, San Jose kept the game within reach. That changed at 18:51, when Miro Heiskanen broke the deadlock with a backhand finish off setup work from Roope Hintz and Jamie Benn. It was the only goal of the opening frame, but it gave Dallas exactly the kind of foothold that let the rest of the game unfold on its terms.

The separation came quickly in the second. Joel Kiviranta doubled the lead at 3:17 on a snap shot created by Oskar Bäck and Radek Faksa, then Benn struck at 6:19 with another snap shot after feeds from Jason Robertson and Hintz. In a span of 3:02, Dallas turned a 1-0 edge into a 3-0 cushion and forced San Jose to chase the game the rest of the way.

Dallas did not ease off after that burst. Robertson added an unassisted wrist shot at 16:30 of the second period to make it 4-0, a goal that underlined how many different parts of the Stars lineup were contributing. Benn finished with a goal and an assist, while Hintz quietly drove the middle of the scoring sheet with two assists.

Depth scoring met a quiet defensive finish

The final goal arrived in the third period at 15:22, when Mikko Rantanen scored on a wrist shot from Sam Steel’s assist. That gave Dallas five goals from five different scorers: Heiskanen, Kiviranta, Benn, Robertson and Rantanen. On a night without a power-play goal, that breadth mattered. The Stars did not lean on one finishing sequence or one hot line; they kept getting offense from different places.

Oettinger took care of the rest. San Jose managed 13 shots all night, and Oettinger turned away every one of them for the shutout. Dallas also finished with 13 blocked shots, which helped keep the Sharks from building any sustained volume. San Jose went 0-for-2 on the power play, so even the chances with an extra skater never changed the shape of the game.

That left Yaroslav Askarov under heavy enough pressure to face 26 shots and make 21 saves. The Sharks did some of the hard defensive work, blocking 21 shots and delivering 30 hits, but the puck did not stay on their sticks often enough to change the flow. San Jose was charged with 18 giveaways, lost the faceoff battle 24-19, and never solved a Dallas team that stayed cleaner with the puck and more efficient with its chances.

Our take: Dallas won the ordinary shifts, and that was enough

The most convincing part of this result is that Dallas did not need special teams to run up the margin. The Stars went 0-for-3 on the power play and still scored five times because they were better at even strength from start to finish. The 26-13 shot gap, the edge in faceoffs and the spread-out scoring all point to the same conclusion: Dallas controlled too many of the routine possessions for San Jose to keep the game close.

For Dallas, the only obvious loose end is the power play, which came up empty despite a comfortable win. For San Jose, the more urgent correction looks simpler and larger: cleaner puck management and more offensive volume. Eighteen giveaways and 13 total shots do not leave much room for a comeback, no matter how much blocking and hitting a team supplies. On this night, the Sharks worked hard defensively, but Dallas made the game about execution, and that difference showed on the scoreboard from the final minute of the first period onward.
