Walton’s two-run 10th-inning homer flips Mariners’ late lead into 6-5 Athletics win

A 10th-inning lead lasted only half an inning for Seattle. Julio Rodriguez pushed the Mariners in front in the top of the 10th, but Donovan Walton answered with a two-run homer in the bottom half, giving the Athletics a 6-5 win at Sutter Health Park.

A game that started untidy stayed that way

Seattle scored first, but there was no sense of control to it. Cal Raleigh brought home Randy Arozarena on a first-inning fielder’s choice, and the Mariners had their opening run without the clean extra-base swing that usually makes a lead feel settled. That ended up fitting the night. This game kept turning on traffic, pressure and the next mistake rather than one long stretch of order.

The Athletics answered immediately. Jeff McNeil doubled to center to score Henry Bolte, then took another run when Max Muncy reached on an infield single and McNeil came home on Cole Young’s throwing error. That sequence mattered because it changed more than the scoreboard. Instead of Seattle carrying an early edge, the Mariners were chasing after giving away an extra 90 feet and then an extra run.

Seattle did pull level in the second when Weston Wilson grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Josh Naylor, but the Athletics kept making their way back onto base. Lawrence Butler’s two-run homer to right in the third, with McNeil scoring ahead of him, restored the home lead at 4-2 and gave the Athletics their clearest stretch of authority. Jeffrey Springs and George Kirby both worked through traffic rather than through comfort; Springs allowed two runs in 5.0 innings, Kirby four runs in 6.0, and neither offense was short on chances, with both teams finishing the night with 21 runners left on base.

Montes changed the middle, Walton owned the ending

The Mariners’ best swing came from Lazaro Montes, and it reset the whole night. His sixth-inning homer to right-center, measured at 430 feet, scored Naylor and tied the game at 4-4. It was Seattle’s only home run, but it was the sharpest reminder that the Mariners did not need a barrage to get back into this game. They needed one clean connection after a lot of incomplete innings, and Montes supplied it.

From there, the middle and late innings became a test of which bullpen would blink last. Seattle got scoreless work from Jose Ferrer, Seranthony Dominguez and Carlos Vargas before the 10th. The Athletics answered with three quiet innings from Luis Medina, Hogan Harris and Elvis Alvarado. For a game with 24 combined hits, there was a surprising amount of suspension after the sixth, as if both teams had agreed to postpone the verdict until extra innings.

The 10th briefly looked like Seattle’s escape hatch. Julio Rodriguez singled to center and Arozarena scored for a 5-4 lead, giving the Mariners the hit they had been trying to stack all night. It did not hold. Walton came up in the bottom half and drove a 366-foot homer to right, scoring Michael Stefanic and ending it at once. After a game full of partial solutions, that was a decisive one.

Our take: the Mariners wasted pressure, the Athletics survived their own looseness

Our take: this is the kind of loss Seattle will remember because the ingredients for a win were plainly there. The Mariners collected 10 hits, drew three walks, stole three bases and still came away with only five runs. They also stranded 21 runners. That is not a call for some abstract offensive overhaul; it is a reminder that when a team creates that much movement on the bases, it has to squeeze more than a fielder’s choice here, a single there and one two-run homer out of it.

There is a direct fielding lesson in it, too. Seattle’s lone error was not cosmetic. Young’s throwing mistake helped turn the first inning from a tie game into an Athletics lead, and in a one-run result that kind of extra damage lingers. If the Mariners are looking for a practical improvement from this one, it starts with tidier conversion of early chances and cleaner defense when innings begin to wobble. Those are not theories; both showed up on the scoreboard.

Our take on the Athletics is slightly different. A 6-5 win backed by 14 hits, two homers and three-hit nights from Butler and Walton is a real offensive success, and McNeil’s two hits and two runs kept him at the center of the scoring. But this was not a flawless template. The Athletics allowed three stolen bases, committed an error, and gave away a late extra-inning lead before reclaiming the game. What they did prove is that their lineup was strong enough to cover for that. On this night, the last damaging swing belonged to Walton, and that was enough.
