Mariners bury Athletics under 23 hits and five homers in 19-1 rout at Sutter Health Park

Some nights read like a box score; this one read like a flood. The Seattle Mariners scored 19 runs on 23 hits, launched five home runs and gave Bryan Woo more than enough room in a 19-1 demolition of the Athletics on Saturday at Sutter Health Park.

Power before the game could breathe

Seattle did not spend much time feeling out the evening. Dominic Canzone opened the scoring with a two-run homer to right-center in the first, bringing home J.P. Crawford, and the Mariners came right back with something louder in the second. Randy Arozarena drove a three-run shot to left-center, with Weston Wilson and Crawford also scoring, and the game had already tilted hard at 5-0. Against Athletics starter Gage Jump, that early damage came fast and clean: two innings, five runs, and two balls over the fence.

The Athletics managed only one answer, and even that never changed the shape of the night. Shea Langeliers produced their lone run in the third on a fielder’s choice that scored Henry Bolte. Bryan Woo otherwise gave Seattle exactly what a lineup like this needs from its starter: calm innings, limited traffic, and no opening for a real swing back. Woo worked 6.0 innings, allowed three hits, one run and no earned runs, while striking out five. Because Seattle’s staff finished with zero earned runs allowed, the Mariners could walk away from a 19-run outburst still knowing their one blemish came from a defensive mistake, not a pitching collapse.

A lineup with no quiet corners

What separated this from a quick burst and a cruise was the way Seattle kept finding fresh contributors. In the fourth, Wilson singled home Michael Arroyo, then Arozarena added another RBI single to score Wilson. In the fifth, Cole Young sent a two-run homer to right-center, with Josh Naylor aboard, and the Mariners had stretched the margin to 9-1 without asking any one hitter to carry the whole weight.

That breadth showed up all over the card. Wilson went 5-for-6 and scored three times. Young finished 3-for-6 with five RBIs. Arroyo was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Julio Rodríguez and Naylor each had three hits of their own. Crawford, Arozarena and Canzone all supplied two hits, meaning Seattle got at least two from eight different hitters. Just as important, the Mariners paired the thunder with constant contact: only four strikeouts in 55 plate appearances, plus six walks and nine extra-base hits. There were home runs, yes, but there were also innings stitched together with singles and pressure.

By the seventh, it was an avalanche

Any chance the game might simply drift to its finish disappeared in the seventh. Arroyo homered to left-center, then Crawford followed later with a two-run shot to center that scored Wilson. Those swings pushed Seattle to 12-1, and the Mariners were still not close to done. The eighth inning brought four more runs, starting with Naylor’s RBI double to score Victor Robles. Young then beat out an infield single that brought home Rodríguez, Arroyo lined a single to center to score Brock Rodden, and Lazaro Montes added an RBI with a bases-loaded walk.

The ninth was less suspense than confirmation. Young singled to left to score Cal Raleigh and Rodríguez, and Arroyo closed the scoring with a sacrifice fly that brought home Rodden. By then the Athletics had used five pitchers, and three of them wore especially difficult lines: Joey Estes allowed five earned runs in 3.0 innings, Yunior Tur was charged with four runs in just two-thirds of an inning, and Carlos Cortes gave up three more across 1.1 innings. When a staff yields 23 hits and 42 total bases, the game tends to stop being about one bad sequence and start being about inning after inning that never gets cleaned up.

Our take: Seattle looked relentless, and Oakland looked stretched thin

Our take: the most impressive thing about the Mariners was not simply the five home runs. It was the refusal to let the score go quiet. Seattle scored in the first, second, fourth, fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings, and the run production came from everywhere — homers from Canzone, Arozarena, Young, Arroyo and Crawford, but also RBI singles from Wilson, Arozarena, Young and Arroyo, a sacrifice fly from Arroyo, a double from Naylor and a run-producing walk from Montes. That is what a complete offensive beating looks like. If Seattle wants a nit to pick from a 19-run night, it can start with the 22 runners left on base and the two double plays that cut off even more. The Mariners were devastating, but the total suggests they were not flawless.

For the Athletics, the fixes are less subtle. On the mound, it would help to find more swing-and-miss and fewer free baserunners, because four strikeouts against six walks and 23 hits allowed left almost no margin to survive. At the plate, the lack of impact contact was just as stark: five hits, all singles, no extra-base hits, and only one run despite three walks. Sixteen runners left on base says there were at least some openings; the problem was turning any of them into sustained offense. Seattle’s bullpen then shut down the final three innings with Cooper Criswell, Hoby Milner and Michael Rucker combining for 3.0 scoreless frames. In a game this lopsided, that last detail matters. The Mariners never gave the Athletics a second breath.
