Hofer’s 25-save shutout and late flurry carry Blues past Stars 4-0

St. Louis scored 94 seconds into the night, added a second goal late in the middle frame and then finished the job with two goals 15 seconds apart in the third, beating Dallas 4-0 at American Airlines Center behind Joel Hofer’s 25-save shutout.

McTavish sets the tone before Dallas can settle

The Blues did not need a long feeling-out process. Mason McTavish opened the scoring at 1:34 of the first period, snapping home a chance created by Colton Parayko and Jimmy Snuggerud. That goal gave St. Louis the kind of start that can simplify the rest of the night: play from ahead, trust the goaltender and force the other side to chase.

Dallas kept the game from getting away early, helped by a heavy shot-blocking effort that finished at 19 and a strong night in the faceoff circle. The Stars won 61.4 per cent of the draws, and the overall shot count ended nearly even at 25-24 in their favour. But the scoreboard told a different story, because St. Louis was cleaner in the moments that mattered most.

The second goal arrived at 13:05 of the middle period and changed the feel of the game. Dalibor Dvorsky scored on a snap shot, with Philip Broberg and Pius Suter drawing the assists, and Dallas suddenly faced a two-goal climb despite having stayed close in the run of play. The Stars remained within range deep into the third, but they never found the one finish that might have altered the pressure.

A tight game until 17:37, then the dam breaks

For most of the third period, 2-0 kept the door open. Dallas still had time, and Hofer still had work to do. Then the late sequence arrived. Snuggerud scored unassisted at 17:37, and 15 seconds later Suter added the fourth goal with Connor McMichael and Hofer picking up assists. In the span of one short burst, a controlled road win became a lopsided final.

That finish also rounded out an offence that was spread through the lineup instead of carried by one star turn. McTavish, Dvorsky, Snuggerud and Suter supplied the goals. Snuggerud and Suter each had a goal and an assist, while Parayko and Broberg helped from the back end. Hofer’s assist on the fourth goal was a fitting extra note on a night he already owned in the crease.

St. Louis did this without leaning on special teams for offence. The Blues went 0-for-4 on the power play, just as Dallas did. Their edge came at five-on-five and in their ability to finish the few openings they did create. On a 24-shot night, there was very little waste in the Blues’ scoring.

Hofer gives Dallas nothing

The central figure was Hofer. His 25-save shutout turned every Dallas push into frustration, whether the Stars were trying to build momentum at even strength or cash one of their four power-play chances. A 4-0 result always belongs partly to the scorers, but this one was built just as firmly on the refusal to allow any reply.

Dallas had no shortage of players trying to generate something. Wyatt Johnston and Tyler Seguin each put up four shots, Sam Steel had three, and Jason Robertson had two. None of it was enough to crack Hofer. That is the hard part of being shut out: a team can do enough to stay in the game statistically and still come away with nothing because the finishing touch is missing.

The Blues were not flawless elsewhere. They lost the faceoff battle badly and were charged with 17 giveaways. They also spent 26 minutes in penalties. Yet none of those numbers hurt them on the scoreboard, because the Stars failed to convert the extra chances and Hofer erased the rest.

Our take: one team finished, the other left the game on the table

St. Louis will take real encouragement from the parts of this performance that travel well. Early scoring, balanced offence and airtight goaltending are reliable ways to win, especially on the road. The caution is obvious too: losing draws 35-22 and giving the puck away 17 times is not a profile most teams want to repeat. On this night, though, the Blues were sharp enough where it counted to make those issues secondary.

For Dallas, the result is more frustrating because several of the supporting numbers were good enough to keep the game alive. The Stars won faceoffs, outshot St. Louis by one and blocked 19 shots. Usually that combination gives a team a better chance than a four-goal defeat suggests. What it did not provide was a finish, and the 0-for-4 power play only deepened that problem.

That is why the final 15 seconds of scoring matter. Until 17:37 of the third, Dallas was still one goal from turning the night tense. After Snuggerud scored and Suter followed almost immediately, the margin finally matched the difference between the teams: not overwhelming territorial dominance, but a clear gap in execution.
