Brewers withstand Cardinals’ three-homer rally and finish with four-run eighth in 8-4 win

Milwaukee built the game without waiting for one big swing

This was a Brewers win assembled in pieces. Brice Turang opened the scoring with a first-inning double that brought home Garrett Mitchell, and Milwaukee kept adding to it in a way that never looked flashy but kept pushing St. Louis backward. After Ivan Herrera’s solo homer tied the game in the fourth, Luis Lara put Milwaukee back in front on a fielder’s choice that scored Christian Yelich. In the fifth, Jake Bauers singled home Turang, and Jackson Chourio forced in another run with a walk that plated Bauers for a 4-1 lead.

That stretch captured the strongest part of Milwaukee’s night. The Brewers did not need a home run to control long portions of the game. Turang finished 2 for 4 with an RBI, Joey Ortiz went 2 for 3 with a walk, David Hamilton added two hits, and the lineup as a whole drew four walks while seeing 137 pitches. It was pressure built through repeated trips on base and enough contact to keep innings alive.

Gasser gave Milwaukee room to breathe, until the seventh changed everything

Robert Gasser made that early offense matter. His six innings were sharp and economical enough to shape the game: one hit, one run, one walk and nine strikeouts on 87 pitches, 57 of them strikes. The only damage against him was Herrera’s fourth-inning homer to left-center. Otherwise, he limited St. Louis to almost nothing resembling steady offense, and the Cardinals spent much of the night trying to hit their way out of empty innings.

They nearly did. St. Louis turned the seventh into a reminder that a quiet lineup can still change a score with one burst. Jordan Walker homered to center to trim the deficit to 4-2, then Alec Burleson followed later in the inning with a two-run shot to right that scored Leo Bernal and wiped out Milwaukee’s lead entirely. Add Herrera’s earlier homer, and the Cardinals had all four of their runs from three swings. For a moment, that was enough to erase six innings of Milwaukee control.

Our take: the steadier offense won out

The tie did not last because Milwaukee had already shown the more sustainable version of offense. The Brewers scored in four different innings, and when the game reached the eighth inning level at 4-4, they had one more push in them. The inning line tells the rest: Milwaukee scored four times in the eighth to turn a tense game into an 8-4 win. Without confirmed play-by-play from that inning, the safest conclusion is also the clearest one — the Brewers kept creating enough traffic that the game eventually broke their way again.

That feels like the useful dividing line between these clubs on this night. St. Louis had real power, but very little around it. The Cardinals struck out 10 times, drew only one walk and did not record an extra-base hit other than the three home runs. When a lineup lives that close to the fence, a comeback can appear quickly and disappear just as quickly. Milwaukee, by contrast, spread the work around. Turang, Bauers, Ortiz, Yelich and Hamilton all helped create the sort of game in which a late inning can still be there to win.

Where each side can look next

For the Brewers, the encouraging part is obvious: they won a game in which their cleanest stretch still had to survive a tied score in the seventh. Gasser’s start gave them a strong template, and the offense showed it can manufacture runs even when the ball is not leaving the yard. If there is a reasonable point to sharpen, it is simply finishing earlier. Milwaukee had chances throughout the night, and a game that looked under control at 4-1 still had to be rescued later.

For the Cardinals, there is no need to dismiss the power display; Herrera, Walker and Burleson gave them a chance they had not earned in quieter ways. But the broader correction is just as plain. More contact and more base traffic would make those home runs matter even more. On the pitching side, Michael McGreevy allowed four earned runs in 4.2 innings, and the staff issued four walks overall. Against a lineup that did not homer once, that is too much room to concede. Milwaukee won because it asked for more outs, more pitches and more answers over the full night — and eventually St. Louis ran out of them.
