Turnover tax proves too steep for Buccaneers as Bengals lean on Evan McPherson in 33-27 win

The first swing came off the ground

Tampa Bay actually struck first, with Chase McLaughlin drilling a 34-yard field goal at 9:09 of the opening quarter. Then the game’s tone changed in the most unforgiving way possible. Demetrius Knight Jr. returned a fumble 27 yards for a Cincinnati touchdown at 6:18, and what had been a tidy Buccaneers start became a Bengals lead. By 1:48 of the first quarter, Joe Burrow had found Mike Gesicki for a 2-yard touchdown, and Cincinnati was up 14-3 without needing fireworks.

The Bengals kept stacking manageable wins from there. Chase Brown’s 5-yard touchdown run pushed the score to 21-3 with 5:32 left in the second quarter, a stretch that reflected Cincinnati’s steadier offensive afternoon. The Bengals finished with 26 first downs to Tampa Bay’s 19 and converted 8 of 14 third downs, compared with 5 of 10 for the Buccaneers. Bucky Irving did answer with a 10-yard touchdown run at 1:49 before halftime, but McPherson’s 20-yard field goal with six seconds left restored a two-touchdown cushion at 24-10.

That pattern defined the day. Baker Mayfield was accurate enough to keep Tampa Bay alive, completing 23 of 28 passes for 216 yards, and Irving was productive in two roles with 45 rushing yards, 48 receiving yards and a touchdown. But the Buccaneers kept dropping winning chances on the turf. Tampa Bay lost four fumbles in all, three by Mayfield and one by Irving, and Cincinnati recovered every one of them. For a game decided by six points, that number loomed over everything else.

Every Tampa push met a McPherson answer

If the third quarter offered the Buccaneers a route back, McPherson kept placing toll booths on it. His 55-yard field goal at 10:03 made it 27-10, and even after McLaughlin answered from 51 yards at 3:41, Cincinnati still seemed in control. Then came Tampa Bay’s most dramatic swing: Josiah Trotter stepped in front of a Burrow throw and returned the interception 38 yards for a touchdown at 2:16, cutting the Bengals’ lead to 27-20. Trotter’s stat line was busy all day — 11 total tackles, a sack, a pass defended and the score that changed the feel of the game.

The comeback, though, never quite became command. McPherson opened the fourth quarter with a 58-yard field goal to stretch the margin back to 10, then added a 32-yarder with 5:19 left for a 33-20 lead. Mayfield’s 9-yard rushing touchdown with 3:19 remaining made the score respectable again at 33-27, but Cincinnati had already rebuilt enough space. McPherson’s final ledger told the story of the Bengals’ composure: 4-for-4 on field goals, 3-for-3 on extra points, 15 points in all.

Burrow’s afternoon was solid rather than overwhelming — 25 of 35 for 254 yards, one touchdown and one interception — yet Cincinnati spread the burden effectively. Gesicki led the Bengals with five catches for 78 yards and the early touchdown. Tee Higgins supplied chunk yardage with 59 on three receptions. Brown added the rushing score and caught five passes of his own. It was not a masterpiece, but it was varied enough to keep moving while the defense kept handing the offense extra possessions.

Our take: the margin lied a little

Cincinnati deserved this result more comfortably than the scoreboard suggests. The Bengals outgained Tampa Bay 351-282, won the turnover battle 4-1, and sustained drives better on third down, yet still spent the afternoon leaving some points on the table. A team that goes 2-for-5 in the red zone and throws an interception that becomes a touchdown is inviting a one-score finish, even on a day when it controls most of the underlying math.

That is the first place Cincinnati can improve. McPherson’s 20-, 55-, 58- and 32-yard field goals were a weapon, but they were also reminders that promising drives stalled short of the end zone. The Bengals got points from six of their nine offensive drives, which is strong, and the defense added another touchdown. Even so, cleaner finishing near the goal line would have turned this from a tense close into a routine win sooner.

For Tampa Bay, the diagnosis is harsher because it is simpler. The Buccaneers got efficient quarterback play, a useful game from Irving, and even a defensive touchdown, but four lost fumbles are too much to survive. Just as important, the defense could not consistently get Cincinnati off the field; the Bengals converted 8 of 14 third downs and kept answering every serious push.
