Marte and Moreno drove Arizona’s middle-inning surge as Diamondbacks routed Rangers 9-1

For four innings, this looked like a game waiting for one clean swing of momentum. Arizona found several of them in a hurry, turning a one-run deficit into a runaway 9-1 win over the Texas Rangers at Chase Field with a four-run fifth and a five-run sixth.

The fifth inning changed everything

Texas did make the first move. In the top of the fifth, Joc Pederson doubled to right, Jake Burger scored, and Danny Jansen advanced to third for a 1-0 Rangers lead. On a night when offense was otherwise scarce for Texas, that swing briefly suggested a grind-it-out formula might be enough, especially with Merrill Kelly already at 80 pitches through 4.1 innings.

But that was as good as it got for the Rangers. They finished with only five hits, no home runs and one extra-base hit, yet still put traffic on the bases with four walks and two hit batters. The problem was what happened after that: 19 runners left on base and three Arizona double plays. That combination tells the story more clearly than the final margin alone. Texas had chances to keep the game narrow or complicate it early; instead, nearly every opening dissolved before it became pressure.

Arizona answered immediately and decisively in the bottom half. Ildemaro Vargas tied the game with a ground-rule double that brought home Jordan Lawlar and moved Ryan Waldschmidt to third. Ketel Marte followed with a two-run double to left, scoring Vargas and Waldschmidt, and Gabriel Moreno then singled to center to bring Marte home for a 4-1 lead. In one inning, the Diamondbacks erased the deficit and turned MacKenzie Gore’s otherwise manageable line into the beginning of a long night for Texas pitching.

Arizona’s lineup kept handing the baton forward

If the fifth inning seized control, the sixth removed any suspense. Marte doubled again, this time to right, to score Waldschmidt. Moreno followed with another RBI single to center, bringing Marte home again. Then came the power: Corbin Carroll homered to left-center, a 382-foot drive that also scored Moreno, and Nolan Arenado added a 371-foot solo homer to left. By the time the inning ended, Arizona had piled up five more runs and the score had stretched to 9-1.

What stood out was how many different kinds of damage Arizona produced. The Diamondbacks did not rely on one isolated burst of power. They stacked doubles, then contact, then home runs. Marte finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Moreno went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Carroll and Arenado supplied the home runs, while Vargas added two hits and an RBI at the top, and Waldschmidt scored twice despite going hitless by reaching via walk. That is the shape of a productive lineup: not everybody needs the same kind of night if enough hitters keep the inning moving.

Texas never found a pitching answer once Arizona started stringing at-bats together. Gore allowed four earned runs in 4.0 innings, and after Jakob Junis posted a scoreless inning, the game unraveled against Chase Silseth and Adam Macko in the sixth. Silseth recorded only two outs while allowing three earned runs, and Macko got one out while giving up two more runs, both on home runs. Jordan Montgomery’s two scoreless innings stabilized the box score late, but by then the decisive work had already been done.

Our take: one club cashed in, the other kept wasting the invitation

The most revealing number in this game may be the one both teams would like back: runners left on base. Arizona left 15 and still scored nine times because it paired its traffic with seven extra-base hits, including five doubles and two homers. Texas left 19 and scored once because almost nothing forceful followed its traffic. That is the difference between a crooked-number offense and a frustrating one, and it is why this game felt lopsided even though both clubs put plenty of men aboard.

Our take on the Rangers is straightforward: the at-bats that matter most have to get cleaner. Texas saw 144 pitches, drew four walks and took two hit batters, so patience was not absent. But with only five hits, one double and three double plays hit into by the Arizona defense, the Rangers repeatedly turned opportunity into empty volume. A reasonable improvement from here would be better situational contact when innings are already alive, because the base traffic was real and the production never followed.

Our take on Arizona is more favorable, with one small caution. The Diamondbacks were excellent once they got rolling, and their bullpen deserves a share of the night after covering 4.2 scoreless innings with five strikeouts and stranding both inherited runners. Still, even in a 9-1 win, there is a little untidiness worth noticing: Kelly needed 80 pitches to get through 4.1 innings, and the lineup still left 15 men on base. When a team hits this many doubles and still has room to be more efficient, that is usually a good sign. On this night, it was also a warning to the Rangers about how quickly Arizona’s offense can turn a close game into a finished one.
