Rangers pack six runs into decisive fifth inning to beat Diamondbacks 6-2 at Chase Field

For four innings, the Texas Rangers were being outscored and outpaced on the board. Then one inning changed the entire shape of the night, and Arizona never found a second answer.

The inning that flipped the game

Arizona had the first clean scoring moment. Tim Tawa came home on Pavin Smith’s single in the third, and for a while that looked like it might be enough to let Brandon Pfaadt control the evening. Texas had put men on base before that, but nothing had turned into damage on the scoreboard.

The fifth changed everything at once. Wyatt Langford opened the Rangers’ outburst by homering to left-center to tie the game, and that was only the beginning. Elias Díaz followed later with an RBI single that scored Jake Burger, Josh Jung added another single to bring Díaz home, Brandon Nimmo doubled to right to score Corey Seager, and Ezequiel Duran capped the inning with a two-run single that scored both Jung and Nimmo. In one frame, Texas moved from trailing 1-0 to leading 6-1.

What made the rally stand out was its variety. The Rangers did not live on one swing alone, even with Langford’s 435-foot homer as the headline shot. They mixed that blast with three RBI singles and an RBI double, and the depth of the order kept the inning going. Díaz finished 3-for-4, Jung had two hits and an RBI, Nimmo added two hits and an RBI, Langford went 2-for-4 with the homer, and Duran’s lone hit carried two runs home. Texas finished with 13 hits overall, and eight different Rangers recorded at least one.

Texas got enough from every arm

That fifth-inning avalanche mattered even more because Texas’ pitching staff kept Arizona from assembling anything larger than isolated answers. Kumar Rocker worked 4.0 innings, allowing just two hits and one run while striking out five. He issued two walks, but Arizona never turned those early opportunities into a crooked number.

From there, the Rangers spread the remaining work across three relievers and never let the Diamondbacks back into full striking distance. Robert Garcia supplied a scoreless inning, Nathan Eovaldi covered 2 2/3 innings and allowed Arizona’s second run on Corbin Carroll’s sacrifice fly in the sixth, and Jacob Latz closed the last 1 1/3 innings without giving up a hit. As a group, Texas pitchers held Arizona to six hits, two runs and a .188 average while striking out 10.

Arizona’s lineup was not completely silent. Gabriel Moreno went 2-for-4 and scored, Tawa reached twice and scored the first run, and Smith delivered one RBI while Carroll added another. But the Diamondbacks never matched Texas’ ability to turn contact into a chain reaction. Their only extra-base hit was a triple, they did not homer, and the scoring log never showed the kind of inning that Texas produced in the fifth.

Our take: useful separation, obvious homework

Our take: this was a convincing Rangers win, but it was also the kind of game that leaves room for nitpicking on the winning side. Texas scored six runs and pounded out 13 hits, yet still left 14 runners on base. That is not a complaint in a 6-2 result so much as a reminder that the lineup created even more than the final score captured. The Rangers’ best offensive stretch came when they stacked different kinds of hits together in the fifth; doing that more often would make a strong night look even cleaner.

For Arizona, the sharper frustration is easier to spot. The Diamondbacks left 17 runners on base, saw 144 pitches and still finished with only two runs. That combination says they generated enough traffic to matter but not enough force to change the game. Moreno’s two-hit night stood out, and Tawa and Smith helped produce the first run, but too many other at-bats ended without impact. Ketel Marte went 0-for-4, Ryan Waldschmidt was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, and Carroll finished 0-for-3 at the plate despite the sacrifice fly.

Pfaadt’s line tells a similar story for Arizona on the mound. Seven strikeouts and no walks over 6 2/3 innings would usually give a club a chance, but all six earned runs landed on his ledger because Texas turned one inning into a flood of hard results. The Diamondbacks did turn three double plays and played error-free baseball, so this was not a defensive unraveling. It was a game decided by conversion: Texas cashed in its biggest inning, and Arizona never came close to matching it.
