Corey Seager’s early jolt and Arizona’s costly fifth lift Rangers past Diamondbacks 7-6

Texas left Chase Field with a 7-6 win that felt comfortable for six innings and narrow by the end. Corey Seager supplied the early thunder, Arizona’s defense cracked at the wrong moment, and the Rangers’ cushion turned out to be just large enough.

Seager’s first swing changed the tone

The Rangers did not spend long feeling out this game. Seager opened the scoring in the first with a 458-foot homer to center, bringing Justin Foscue home with him and immediately forcing Arizona to play from behind. In a one-run finish, that early separation mattered twice: it gave Texas the lead and it gave Seager a game that belonged to him almost from the start. He finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs, the clearest offensive standout on either side.

Eduardo Rodriguez still missed bats, piling up seven strikeouts in five and one-third innings, but he never fully erased the damage from that opening inning. On the other side, Cal Quantrill gave Texas exactly the kind of start that let its offense breathe. He worked six innings, allowed five hits and two runs, walked nobody and struck out four. Arizona did not break through until Gabriel Moreno’s solo homer in the fourth, and even as Diamondbacks hitters kept putting balls in play, the lack of free passes kept the game from tipping earlier.

One fifth inning, two errors, and the game’s biggest turn

The defining sequence arrived in the fifth, when Texas turned a manageable 2-1 edge into a four-run cushion and Arizona helped it along. Josh Jung singled to left, Foscue scored on the play, and Seager came home on a fielding error by left fielder Lars Nootbaar as Jung advanced to second. Brandon Nimmo then singled to left to bring in Jung for a 5-1 lead. Those were the kinds of runs Arizona could least afford to donate, and they hung over the rest of the afternoon. The Diamondbacks were charged with two errors, and only four of the seven Texas runs were earned.

Texas added two more in the sixth and, in retrospect, needed both. Danny Jansen doubled to left to score Ezequiel Duran, then Seager singled to right to bring Jansen in and push the lead to 7-1. What stands out about the Rangers’ offense is how concentrated it was. They managed only one walk and struck out 10 times, but when the productive at-bats arrived, they were decisive. Seager, Jung, Nimmo and Jansen accounted for all six Texas RBIs, a reminder that an uneven lineup can still win when the middle of it cashes in.

Arizona’s bats woke up, but too much had already slipped away

The Diamondbacks did not go quietly. Nolan Arenado cut deeply into the lead in the seventh with a three-run homer to left, scoring Geraldo Perdomo and Corbin Carroll to make it 7-4. That swing gave Arizona a real path back, especially with Perdomo collecting three hits and Moreno already having homered earlier. In the ninth, the comeback tightened the game further when Tim Tawa doubled home Arenado and Jordan Lawlar doubled home Tawa. A four-run deficit became a one-run finish.

And yet Arizona’s box line reads like the story of a missed opportunity. The Diamondbacks out-hit Texas 12-10, batted .333 as a team, produced five extra-base hits and struck out only six times. Usually that collection of numbers gives a club a strong chance to win. Here, the missing piece was conversion. Arizona left 13 runners on base and grounded into three double plays, so too many promising innings ended with nothing. Robert Garcia’s scoreless eighth for Texas sits quietly in the middle of that story; it was the Rangers’ one clean bridge inning after Arenado had made the game feel unstable again.

Our take: Texas finished its openings; Arizona wore its mistakes

Our take: this was a good win for Texas, but not a flawless one. Seager’s day was the difference, and Quantrill’s six steady innings gave the Rangers room to survive a messy finish. Still, the offense leaned hard on a handful of hitters. Outside Seager, Jung, Nimmo and Jansen, the rest of the Texas lineup went 2-for-20 with one walk and eight strikeouts. That is a warning tucked inside a victory: the Rangers found enough offense against Arizona, but broader production would make leads like this less fragile.

Our take: Arizona’s clearest route to better results is not more contact, because the Diamondbacks already had plenty of that. It is cleaner defense and sharper sequencing with men aboard. The fifth-inning error by Nootbaar directly extended the Rangers’ lead, and the three ground-ball double plays plus 13 runners left on base explain why 12 hits still produced a loss. When a team hits this well and still comes up short, the culprit is usually self-inflicted somewhere. In this game, it showed up in both the glove and the timing.
