Pete Alonso’s second homer erases Toronto’s fast start as Orioles edge Blue Jays 4-3

The first inning looked like Toronto’s script

Toronto could not have asked for a cleaner opening burst. Nathan Lukes started the scoring with a single to left that brought home Brett Bateman and sent Alejandro Kirk to second. George Springer followed with a single of his own, scoring Kirk and moving Lukes to third. Sean Keys then added a sacrifice fly to right, and in the span of one inning the Blue Jays had turned a few sharp early at-bats into a 3-0 lead.

What makes the loss sting is everything that happened after that. Toronto did not score again over the final eight innings. The Blue Jays finished with six hits and three walks, but every hit was a single, and 11 runners were left on base. Two ground-ball double plays helped flatten later threats. Baltimore starter Shane Baz, who was hit hard in that first inning, recovered to finish 6 2/3 innings with only those three runs allowed, and the Orioles’ bullpen carried the rest from there.

Baltimore answered one swing at a time

The Orioles never matched Toronto with volume; they matched them with impact. Pete Alonso put Baltimore on the board with a solo homer to right in the first. Gunnar Henderson cut the lead to 3-2 with another solo shot in the sixth. That pattern defined the night for the Blue Jays’ pitchers: they struck out 10 Orioles and issued only two walks, but three of Baltimore’s six hits left the yard.

The decisive turn came in the eighth. Christian Franklin reached with a walk and later scored when Alonso drove a 400-foot homer to left, flipping a 3-2 Toronto lead into a 4-3 Baltimore advantage. The inning also showed how narrow the margin had become. Mason Fluharty was charged with Franklin’s run, and Tyler Rogers was charged with Alonso’s, a split that underlined how one baserunner had become all Baltimore needed before its biggest bat connected again.

Our take: Toronto created traffic, not enough pressure

There is a particular frustration in losing with as many chances as Toronto had. The Blue Jays saw 127 pitches and put nine men on base through six hits and three walks, but traffic is not the same thing as sustained pressure when there is no extra-base damage behind it. Six hits produced only six total bases. The first inning showed the value of simple sequencing; the rest of the night showed how hard it is to keep scoring when the attack becomes almost entirely station to station.

The pitching line is similarly maddening if you view it from Toronto’s side. Ten strikeouts, six hits allowed and only two walks usually give a club a strong platform. This time, the problem was not the number of Orioles reaching base so much as what happened when they did square one up. Baltimore produced 17 total bases from those six hits, thanks to three home runs and a triple. If there is an obvious area for Toronto to tighten, it is limiting that kind of isolated damage after otherwise effective innings.

Our take: Baltimore found enough, but not a complete night

The Orioles earned this result because their best swings were decisive and because their pitching staff stabilized the game after a rough first inning. Baz lasted 6 2/3 innings and kept Toronto off the board after the opening frame. Yennier Cano covered 1 1/3 scoreless innings, and Rico Garcia finished the ninth with two strikeouts. In a game where both clubs had six hits and neither committed an error, Baltimore’s ability to get from a shaky start to a clean finish mattered as much as Alonso’s headline power.

There is still a cautionary note inside the win. Baltimore struck out 10 times, drew only two walks and left eight runners on base. The offense was productive at the exact moments it needed to be, but it was not consistently on top of the game. Creating more baserunners ahead of Alonso and Henderson would make nights like this less dependent on home runs. Even so, the difference on this night was plain: Toronto had the early run of play, but Baltimore had the heavier swings, and by the eighth inning those swings had rewritten the whole evening.
