The inning Baltimore bent to its will

The Orioles did not build this win with steady traffic. They built it with precision in the second inning, when a modest opening became a two-run advantage. Jeremiah Jackson’s single to center brought home Christian Encarnacion-Strand and sent Colton Cowser to third, giving Baltimore its first breakthrough against Max Scherzer.

The second run was the sort of play that changes the tone of a game even when it lasts only a few seconds on paper. Cowser stole home while Jackson was caught stealing second, and Baltimore suddenly had a 2-0 lead without needing another hit. In a game where both clubs would leave runners all over the field, that bit of aggression mattered. The Orioles took a thin opportunity and stretched it to its full value.

One clean swing, then a chance to chase

Scherzer’s line was not all trouble. He struck out seven over five innings, and after the second he largely kept Baltimore from turning scattered baserunners into a bigger inning. But the mistake that mattered most came in the fifth, when Dylan Beavers scored ahead of Alonso’s 412-foot homer to left-center. That one swing pushed the Orioles to 4-0 and supplied the cleanest offense either team produced all evening.

That fifth-inning homer also sharpened the contrast in the game. Baltimore had only one extra-base hit all night, but it was the biggest hit on the board. Toronto, meanwhile, stacked up doubles and singles without ever finding a comparable blow. Once Alonso connected, the Blue Jays were left trying to piece together a comeback one baserunner at a time.

To Toronto’s credit, the pitching kept the door open after that. Jose Rodriguez, Brendon Little and Paul Sewald covered the final three innings and did not allow the game to get away. Rodriguez struck out two in his inning, Little added another strikeout, and Baltimore finished with just five hits total. The Blue Jays had a real chance to turn the late innings into a chase. They just never turned traffic into momentum often enough.

Ten hits, two runs, too many empty trips

This is the part that will bother Toronto. The Blue Jays out-hit Baltimore 10-5, collected four doubles, struck out only four times and still walked away with just two runs. They left 19 runners on base. That number overwhelms almost every other detail from their offensive line, because it explains why the scoreboard looked so out of proportion to the hit column.

The push finally came in the sixth. Kazuma Okamoto and George Springer both scored on a chaotic play that began with Brandon Valenzuela’s infield single to second and unraveled when Jackson’s throw sailed away. It cut Baltimore’s lead to 4-2 and briefly suggested the game might flip on one messy defensive sequence.

But the Blue Jays never produced the follow-up inning their hit total seemed to promise. Andres Gimenez, Valenzuela and Ernie Clement all had two-hit nights, Springer scored once, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. added a hit of his own. There were contributors throughout the order. What there was not was a sustained finish to any rally. One walk in 37 plate appearances only added to the burden: Toronto had to string hits together, and too often the chain broke before the inning did real damage.

Our take: efficiency beat volume

Our take: Baltimore won this game more convincingly than its offensive totals would suggest, and less completely than a 4-2 score can sometimes imply. The Orioles struck out 10 times, managed only five hits and left 15 runners on base, so this was not a polished night for the lineup. What they did better was convert their clearest openings. Jackson drove in one run, Cowser forced another home with pure boldness, and Alonso delivered the only home run of the game. That is enough when the other side keeps letting innings fade.

There is improvement available for both clubs, and the numbers point directly to it. For Toronto, the answer starts with situational execution because 10 hits and 19 men left on base is too much wasted work to ignore. For Baltimore, more consistent contact with runners aboard would make this formula less fragile; four runs from five hits worked once, but 10 strikeouts and 15 left on base show how little margin there was underneath it.

Baltimore’s pitching deserves its share of the credit as well. Chris Bassitt handled the first five innings, and the Orioles used Luis De Leon, Anthony Nunez, Rico Garcia and Andrew Kittredge to close out the rest, with Kittredge earning the save. The staff allowed only one walk across the night, which mattered in a game defined by stranded runners. Toronto kept knocking, but Baltimore kept forcing the Blue Jays to earn every last step of the comeback. They never did.
