Blue Jays break open tight game with four-run seventh to beat Rangers 7-2

Pressure came early, and it never really left

Toronto’s edge in this game was less about one explosive swing than about a steady accumulation of trouble for Texas pitching. The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the first when Nathan Lukes lifted a sacrifice fly to left to bring home Brett Bateman, and they added another run in the third on Sean Keys’ double to right that scored Lukes. By then, the shape of the afternoon was already visible: Toronto was getting men on base, extending at-bats and forcing the Rangers to work through traffic.

Bateman kept showing up in the middle of those moments. He scored three times, reached via a hit and two walks, and became the runner Texas never quite managed to quiet. Lukes was just as central, finishing with two hits, two runs and two RBI, while also delivering that opening sacrifice fly. Toronto’s lineup as a whole saw 149 pitches in 43 plate appearances, drew six walks and added a hit batter. For a game with no Blue Jays home runs, that is still a substantial amount of offensive weight.

Texas did answer in one clean stroke. Jake Burger’s two-run homer to left-center in the fourth scored Ezequiel Duran and erased the first two Toronto leads at once. For a moment, the game had a different feel, because Jacob deGrom had kept damage manageable despite four walks in 4.1 innings. But Toronto answered right away in the fifth, when Kazuma Okamoto singled to center to score Bateman for a 3-2 lead. That quick response mattered. It kept the Blue Jays from letting Burger’s swing become the turning point.

The seventh was where the game stopped being close

The Blue Jays entered the seventh ahead by just one run. They left it with the game in hand. Lukes started the scoring in the inning with a single to right that brought home Bateman again, pushing the margin to 4-2. It was not a knockout blow by itself, but it widened the crack that Texas had been trying to keep narrow all afternoon.

Then Charles McAdoo delivered the big extra-base hit of the day for Toronto, doubling to left to score both Lukes and Myles Straw. Andres Gimenez followed with a single to right to bring McAdoo home, and the score had jumped from 3-2 to 7-2. That sequence is the game in miniature: no home-run theatrics, just runners aboard, solid contact and immediate capitalization when a pitching stretch got away from Texas.

The inning also exposed the Rangers’ biggest problem on the day. Tyler Alexander recorded no outs and was charged with three earned runs on two hits and a walk. Chase Silseth stemmed it only after another run crossed. Texas had gotten 1 2/3 scoreless innings from Robert Garcia before that, and Adam Macko later supplied 2 1/3 shutout innings, but the damage in the seventh was already definitive. In a game without defensive errors on either side, that stretch of command and contact was enough to decide it.

Our take: Toronto earned this with patience; Texas wasted too much traffic

Our take: this was a persuasive Blue Jays win because it was built on repeatable things. Toronto did not rely on an outlier power surge. It won with 11 hits, four doubles, six walks and only five strikeouts. That combination tends to travel well. When a club can produce seven runs without a homer, it usually means innings are being built rather than borrowed, and that was the story here. The Blue Jays were especially sharp at the top of their offensive chain, where Bateman’s three runs and Lukes’ two-RBI line kept reappearing in the box score.

There is still room for Toronto to be cleaner with all that traffic, because 43 plate appearances and that many baserunners can sometimes yield even more than seven runs. But the more important takeaway is that the pressure never stopped. DeGrom faced 82 pitches in 4.1 innings, and the Rangers’ staff allowed a .419 opponent on-base percentage for the game. That is a difficult way to survive nine innings against any lineup.

For Texas, the fix begins with converting opportunities into more than one swing. The Rangers had eight hits and four walks, and Evan Carter went 3-for-4 while Alejandro Osuna added two hits. Burger’s homer accounted for all of the scoring, but Texas produced no doubles or triples and was shut out over the final five innings. Corey Seager went 0-for-5, Josh Jung went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, and too much of the offense wound up resting on Burger’s one at-bat. On the mound, the recommendation is simpler because the evidence is plain: fewer free passes and fewer long innings. Toronto turned six walks, a hit batter and a no-out seventh against Alexander into a comfortable margin, and that is exactly the kind of accumulation the Rangers have to prevent next time.
