Golden Knights erase Maple Leafs' 3-0 start and finish comeback in shootout

Vegas gave away the first 8:37, then owned enough of the rest to recover. The Golden Knights wiped out an early three-goal deficit, rode a 43-shot night to a 3-3 tie, and beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 in a shootout at T-Mobile Arena.

Toronto's burst arrived almost immediately

Toronto could hardly have written a cleaner opening. Jack Roslovic put the Maple Leafs ahead 34 seconds in with a backhand finish, set up by Auston Matthews and Kirill Marchenko. Before Vegas had settled, Easton Cowan made it 2-0 at 3:20 on a snap shot with Chris Tanev on the assist. Nick Paul pushed the lead to 3-0 at 8:37, blasting home a slap shot after Darren Raddysh and Gavin McKenna moved the play along.

The early flurry spread the scoring across the lineup rather than leaning on one line alone. Roslovic and Cowan each scored their second goals of the season, while Paul opened his account. Matthews did not score, but he helped drive the start with an assist and a 15-for-21 night in the faceoff circle. For a while, Toronto paired finish with control, winning draws and converting the few openings it created.

Vegas turned the game back before the midpoint

The comeback began before the first intermission. Mark Stone cut the deficit to 3-1 at 17:36 of the opening period, finishing a slap shot off feeds from Jack Eichel and Ivan Barbashev. That mattered because it changed the shape of the night: instead of spending the break staring at a shutout, Vegas went in with a pulse and came out pressing again.

The Golden Knights erased the rest of the gap in a hurry. Brett Howden deflected in the 3-2 goal just 1:12 into the second period, with Mitch Marner and William Karlsson collecting assists. Then Eichel tied it himself at 3:58, beating Toronto unassisted to finish a three-goal Vegas answer that stretched from late in the first to the opening minutes of the second.

From there, the scoring stopped but the pressure did not. Vegas finished with a 43-24 edge in shots and a 27-13 advantage in hits, numbers that help explain why Sergei Bobrovsky's night became one of Toronto's biggest reasons the game lasted as long as it did. He stopped 40 of 43 shots for a .930 save percentage. Adin Hill was less busy at the other end but steadied matters after the rough start, finishing with 21 saves on 24 shots.

Neither power play delivered a breakthrough. Toronto went 0-for-1 with the extra man, and Vegas failed on four opportunities, which kept the game even through a scoreless third period and overtime. In the shootout, Braeden Bowman and Trevor Connelly scored for Vegas. Marchenko supplied Toronto's only conversion, and the Golden Knights completed the recovery.

Our take: the shot gap told the longer story

A three-goal lead inside nine minutes usually gives a team room to manage the rest of the night. Toronto never found that second layer. The Maple Leafs scored three times on their first-period surge, then did not beat Hill again over the remaining 56:23 of regulation and overtime. Winning 59.7 per cent of the faceoffs and killing all four penalties were real positives, but the 19 giveaways and the 43-24 shot deficit kept putting the burden back on Bobrovsky. If Toronto wants these fast starts to hold up, easing that workload looks like the clearest place to improve.

Vegas, meanwhile, earned this one by refusing to let the opening minutes define it. Eichel and Stone were central to the push, Howden supplied the tying sequence's middle goal, and the Golden Knights kept producing attempts even without a power-play goal. There is still an obvious area to clean up: a team that generated 43 shots and four power plays would prefer to finish the game before a shootout, especially after losing the faceoff battle so clearly. Still, the larger verdict is favourable. After falling behind 3-0, Vegas built enough of the game to make the final result feel deserved.
