Wild’s three-goal first-period burst sends Golden Knights to 4-2 loss

Minnesota did the hard part early and never let Vegas fully erase it. The Wild scored three times in a 5:07 stretch late in the first period, then survived a pushback to beat the Golden Knights 4-2 on Tuesday night at Grand Casino Arena.

Five minutes that decided the night

For most of the opening period, the game stayed quiet on the scoreboard. Then Minnesota broke it open in a rush that Vegas never quite caught. Matt Boldy opened the scoring at 11:50 of the first, finishing a wrist shot with Olli Maatta and Quinn Hughes on the setup. Less than three minutes later, Maxim Shabanov made it 2-0 at 14:32, again with Hughes involved as the lone assist.

The level changed again at 16:57, when Danila Yurov added a snap shot off feeds from Bobby Brink and Rieger Lorenz. That gave Minnesota a 3-0 lead before the first intermission and turned one close game into a chase for the visitors. The sequence mattered more than any single total on the stat sheet: three Wild goals in 5:07 forced Vegas to spend the final 40 minutes trying to repair the opening damage.

There was still work left for Minnesota after the burst, and there was still resistance from Vegas. Carter Hart finished with 24 saves and, after that rough closing stretch of the first, did not allow another goal while he remained in net. But the early deficit had already changed the terms of the night. Minnesota had scoring from three different players in one period, while Quinn Hughes had already built a two-assist evening before the game was 20 minutes old.

Vegas answered, but the climb stayed unfinished

The Golden Knights finally cut into the margin early in the second period. Rasmus Andersson scored at 2:37 on a slap shot, with Tomas Hertl and Raphael Lavoie collecting the assists. It was a useful response and, just as importantly, it kept the game from drifting further away after Minnesota’s first-period run.

Vegas found another step in the third. William Karlsson scored at 9:25 from Brett Howden and Mitch Marner to bring the Golden Knights within one at 3-2. That gave the final 10 minutes real tension, especially in a game where the overall shot totals were not wildly lopsided. Minnesota finished with 28 shots to Vegas’ 23, and the faceoff split was similarly narrow, 30-28 in Vegas’ favour.

Still, the equalizer never came. Joel Eriksson Ek restored Minnesota’s cushion at 18:38 of the third, with Kirill Kaprizov earning the lone assist on the Wild’s fourth goal. Jesper Wallstedt closed with 21 saves and a .913 save percentage, enough to carry the lead through Vegas’ late bid. Minnesota also got value from its defensive support, blocking 19 shots compared with Vegas’ 16.

Our take

This result was decided by two connected facts: Minnesota finished its early looks, and Vegas wasted its best special-teams opening. The Wild went 1-for-1 on the power play. The Golden Knights had five chances and went 0-for-5. In a two-goal game, that difference is the cleanest explanation for why a comeback remained incomplete.

There were encouraging signs for Vegas after the first intermission. Andersson and Karlsson supplied the goals, Hertl, Howden, Marner and Lavoie chipped in assists, and the club edged the faceoff count. But a power play loaded with high-minute offensive players did not break through. Jack Eichel logged 7:02 on the power play, Hertl 6:50, Mark Stone 6:47 and Marner 6:46, and the unit still finished empty. That is not a mystery of bad luck alone; it is the kind of missed opportunity that makes an early hole feel even deeper.

Minnesota, for its part, can like the balance and still see the warning signs. Nine Wild skaters recorded at least one point, Hughes had two assists, and the team got goals from Boldy, Shabanov, Yurov and Eriksson Ek. That is the profile of a night with broad support. But six penalties for 15 minutes gave Vegas too many routes back into the game, and 13 giveaways are not the numbers of a completely tidy performance. The Wild earned this win with their first-period surge and timely finish. They also learned how thin the margin can feel when a 3-0 lead gets trimmed to one.
