Gatcomb answers Lekkerimaki in 34 seconds as Golden Knights edge Canucks 3-2

Jonathan Lekkerimaki pulled Vancouver even late in the second period, but the tie disappeared almost immediately. Marc Gatcomb scored 34 seconds later, and that quick reply held up as the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Canucks 3-2 at Rogers Arena.

The tie barely had time to settle

Vancouver carried the first meaningful edge into the intermission when Paul Cotter redirected a tip-in at 18:52 of the opening period. Filip Hronek and Elias Pettersson set up the play, and the Canucks had something tangible to show for a frame in which they were being asked to do plenty of defensive work.

Vegas turned the game in the second. Mitch Marner equalized at 9:01 off a setup from Brayden McNabb, then Victor Olofsson put the Golden Knights ahead at 14:30 with Mark Stone and Jack Eichel collecting the assists. In a period that produced all three Vegas goals, the visitors found the cleaner finishing touch exactly when Vancouver needed the game to slow down.

The Canucks were not finished. Lekkerimaki tied it 2-2 at 17:54 of the second on a snap shot created by Linus Karlsson and Luke Schenn, giving Rogers Arena a late reset. It lasted 34 seconds. Gatcomb struck at 18:28, with Braeden Bowman and Nic Dowd on the helpers, and that was the sequence that decided the night.

Vegas owned the middle frame and protected the margin

That one-goal final sat on a simple split: Vancouver won the first period 1-0, Vegas won the second 3-1, and neither side scored in the third. The Golden Knights finished with a 28-19 edge in shots, while Adin Hill stopped 17 of 19 for the win. Kevin Lankinen kept Vancouver close with 25 saves on 28 shots, but the Canucks spent too much of the game absorbing the extra chances Vegas generated.

Special teams helped define the balance without overwhelming it. Vegas went 1-for-5 on the power play, Vancouver went 1-for-3, and the faceoff count finished perfectly even at 25 wins apiece. In a game that tight on the scoreboard, the larger separation came from discipline and volume: the Canucks took five penalties for 10 minutes, while Vegas took three for six minutes and still managed the better shot total.

Vancouver's effort numbers were not the problem. The Canucks recorded 24 hits and 19 blocked shots, both higher than Vegas, and they got goals from Cotter and Lekkerimaki with assists spread among Hronek, Pettersson, Linus Karlsson and Schenn. But with only 19 shots on goal as a team, there was little room for a mistake once Vegas started finishing its chances in the second period.

Our take: The answer goal covered for Vegas, while Vancouver's margin stayed too thin

The most impressive part of Vegas' win was not just the three-goal second period, but the refusal to let the game reset after Lekkerimaki tied it. Good teams do not always dominate every category; sometimes they simply answer faster. That was the Golden Knights here. They also won despite 19 giveaways, a number that would be harder to survive against an opponent creating more than 19 shots. The result was efficient, not flawless.

For Vancouver, the outline is fairly clear. The Canucks defended with commitment and kept the faceoff battle even, which is why this remained a one-goal game to the end. Still, five penalties gave Vegas five power-play opportunities, and the offence never built enough volume to offset that burden. If there is a lesson in a 3-2 loss like this, it is not that everything needs to change. It is that the hard work Vancouver already showed has to be paired with cleaner puck management and a little more shot generation, otherwise one 34-second lapse can erase a night's worth of recovery.
