Alex Tuch’s first-period brace powers Capitals past Hurricanes 5-2

Washington put the game in Carolina’s hands only in stretches, but the Capitals were far sharper where it mattered most Friday night: they finished early, answered trouble quickly and rode Logan Thompson’s 31 saves to a 5-2 win at Lenovo Center.

Three early strikes changed the night

Washington did not need a long feeling-out period. Alex Tuch opened the scoring at 6:33 of the first on a wrist shot, with Pierre-Luc Dubois and Alex Ovechkin drawing the assists, and the Capitals kept pressing the advantage. Cole Hutson doubled the lead at 11:33, finishing a setup from Ilya Protas and Aliaksei Protas, before Tuch struck again at 14:23 on a backhand from another Dubois feed to make it 3-0.

That sequence gave the game its shape. Carolina would finish with more shots, 33-27, and far more hits, 32-19, but Washington’s finishing in the opening period created the margin that the Hurricanes spent the rest of the night chasing. Tuch, in particular, turned a strong individual line into the game’s clearest difference up front: two goals on three shots, plus a plus-2 rating.

Washington added to the damage only 1:36 into the second when Jakob Chychrun scored on a snap shot off an assist from Dylan Strome. At 4-0, the Capitals had not overwhelmed Carolina in every category, but they had been ruthless in the one that matters most. Four goals on their first four scoring plays gave Thompson and the Washington blue line a wide enough cushion to manage the rest of the evening.

Carolina found moments, but not a turn

The Hurricanes did eventually break through late in the second. Sebastian Aho scored at 16:50, assisted by Andrei Svechnikov and Jackson Blake, and for a few seconds the building had reason to imagine a push. Instead, Washington erased that flicker almost immediately. Ryan Leonard restored the four-goal lead just eight seconds later, taking feeds from Strome and Chychrun to make it 5-1.

That answer may have been the most important moment after the first-period burst. Aho’s goal could have sent the game into a tense final stretch; Leonard’s reply kept it clinical. Strome finished with two assists, Chychrun had a goal and an assist from the back end, and Washington’s supporting cast kept adding pressure without needing one player to dominate every shift.

Carolina did not disappear. Logan Stankoven scored on a tip-in at 10:50 of the third, with K'Andre Miller and William Carrier assisting, and the Hurricanes’ shot total shows they kept sending pucks toward the net. Svechnikov led Carolina with six shots, while Stankoven and Nikolaj Ehlers had four each. But Brandon Bussi’s 22 saves at the other end were undermined by an .815 save percentage, and the hole from the first 20 minutes remained too deep.

Our take: Washington won the details Carolina could not

This was not a game Washington controlled by volume. Carolina had the edge in shots, delivered more hits and received six power-play opportunities to Washington’s two. The Capitals won because they were cleaner in the decisive details: they finished early chances, won the faceoff battle 53.2 per cent to 46.8 per cent, and blocked 28 shots compared with Carolina’s nine.

Those blocked-shot totals matter here because they match the broader picture of the night. Matt Roy and Martin Fehervary blocked five shots apiece, Vincent Desharnais had three, and Washington repeatedly forced Carolina to work through layers before the puck ever reached Thompson. When it did, Thompson answered with 31 saves and a .939 save percentage, including 14 saves while Washington was shorthanded.

For Carolina, the path to improvement is fairly plain even without overcomplicating the result. The Hurricanes generated 33 shots and drew six power plays, yet converted only once with the extra skater and never truly recovered from the first-period finishing gap. That does not erase the pressure they created, but it does show where the night slipped away. Washington, meanwhile, can like the scoring depth and the immediate response moments, even if the eight penalties and 18 giveaways leave room for a cleaner outing next time.
