Capitals turn 15 shots into a 5-1 win over Flyers after second-period surge

Drysdale opened it. Washington answered with force.

For one shift, the game tilted Philadelphia's way. Jamie Drysdale scored 31 seconds into the second period on a wrist shot, with Travis Konecny and Tyson Foerster drawing the assists, and the Flyers finally had a breakthrough after a scoreless first.

The lead did not last long enough to settle the night. Andrew Cristall tied it at 4:32 on a backhand finish, set up by Spencer Smallman, and Washington suddenly looked far more decisive with the chances it created. Just 3:04 later, Maxim Schafer put the Capitals ahead 2-1 with an unassisted snap shot.

That swing became the defining stretch of the game. Ethen Frank added another at 12:24 of the second, converting a snap shot off feeds from Louie Belpedio and Cristall. In less than eight minutes, Washington turned a 1-0 hole into a 3-1 advantage, and Philadelphia spent the rest of the evening chasing a game it had briefly led.

A shot gap that told two different stories

The most striking number in this result is not the score alone. Philadelphia outshot Washington 34-15, won 56.8 per cent of the faceoffs and earned four power plays. That is usually enough to keep a team firmly in a game. On this night, it was not nearly enough to recover from the damage done in the second period.

Washington made the shot deficit survivable by protecting the middle of the game in other ways. The Capitals were credited with 12 blocked shots to Philadelphia's six, and they killed all four Flyers power plays. Philadelphia generated attempts and possession markers, but the Capitals turned the evening into a finishing contest and won it comfortably.

The special-teams edge mattered as well. Washington scored once on three power-play chances, while the Flyers went 0-for-4. In a game where the Capitals produced only 15 shots, every extra conversion mattered. Philadelphia, by contrast, had no margin for a cold power play once its even-strength lead disappeared.

Niederbach's early third-period goal removed the suspense

Any realistic Flyers push needed to start at the opening of the third. Instead, Theodor Niederbach scored just 1:07 into the period on an unassisted snap shot, stretching the Washington lead to 4-1 and draining much of the pressure from the final frame. From there, the Capitals could play from well in front while Philadelphia faced the harder task of trying to erase a three-goal gap against a team that had already shown how ruthlessly it would finish limited looks.

Our take: Philadelphia owned some of the right categories, but Washington owned the result

There are nights when the box score flatters the loser because of shot volume. This was not really one of them. The Flyers did enough at the dot and generated enough attempts to make the game respectable on paper, but they allowed five goals on only 15 shots and came up empty on four power plays. That combination points less to bad luck than to a team that failed at the moments that decided the scoreboard.

For Washington, the win is encouraging and cautionary at the same time. The finishing was sharp, Cristall had the best individual night among the listed scorers with a goal and an assist, and the penalty kill was perfect. But being outshot 34-15, losing the faceoff battle and being charged with 16 giveaways are not habits to admire. If the Capitals clean up the puck management while keeping anything close to this level of efficiency, results like this will become easier to explain than this one was.
